Dmitri’s book….I thought that his character had the most growth potential so far and I was not wrong. Were/Are you scared to read Dmitri’s book because in the first three he seemed like an unapologetic arrogant ass? I mean his actions thus far towards Elena have made him questionable in my eyes but then there is that fierce devotion to Raphael he has so I always felt that he couldn’t be all bad.

Well well well I was not disappointed. Dmitri is a complex character with a pretty heart wrenching backstory that explains

❶ - Why Raphael and he are so tight and have complete trust in each other.

❷ - Why he has been throwing his scent around toward Elena and altering between trying to seduce her or kill her.

❸ - What happened to the family and children he once had.

I was captivated by this story that is so much darker than the prior ones. When Dmitri meets Honor the Hunter assigned to help him capture a foe thought long dead he feels a spark that he hasn’t felt for a women in over a millennia. Honor has her own dark story and abuse to overcome. She was held hostage by a group of vampires for their ‘enjoyment’ and is still dealing with the PTSD she is suffering from that.

I liked Honor and how hard she started to work to put her life back together after hiding out for almost a year after her tragic attack. She was a strong woman who went through a horrible tragedy so it was easy to see why she and Dmitri would connect on some fundamental level as details from his past surfaced too. You could tell that even as he was being hard on Honor he was actually helping her deal with the residual issues she was having.

“Those who say vengeance eats you up are wrong—it doesn’t, not if you do it right.”

Being in Dmitri’s head also helped understand his motivations better and now I actually like the strange way he is working to help Elena to become a stronger consort and mate for Raphael. Please don’t think for a second that he is all sunshine and rainbows and kittens. He definitely isn’t, he is still brutal, hard and not mortal. But I know get the places that everything about him comes from and I really liked his dark and twisted story.

“Ever had a woman say no to you, Dmitri?”
“Once.” He turned the corner with a smile that made her want to cup his face, trace those beautiful lips with her own. “I married her.”

Add to that a little more development for a few other side characters and this is my favorite story from this world so far. I’m pretty sure I know who Venom will be matched up with later and since she threatened to chop his head off I will really enjoy that courtship when it happens. There was also a little more on the guild hunter Ashwini and the Vampire that is currently pursuing her. It does appear that Vampire courtships are aggressive and maybe a bit violent but definitely never boring.

I don’t want to say that I didn’t like Raphael and Elena’s story so far because I did but it was really nice to get a broader few of the world from a few other character PoVs in the story. I look forward to discovering Jason’s story next.

The central romance and main characters of Archangel's Blade are Dmitri, leader of Raphael’s Seven and Honor St. Nicholas, a non- hunter-born human hunter. In a lot of ways Dmitri and Honor felt like Raphael and Elena 2.0. Strong, resilient, independent and deeply traumatized female lead check. Honor is fresh from a two month abduction and captivity in which she was repeatedly physically and sexually assaulted by a gang of rogue vampires (well, not an actual “gang”; but several rogue vampires). “Dangerous”, jaded, emotionally unavailable/remote, immortal and also deeply traumatized (eons ago) male lead check. Unlikely wham bam thank you ma'am epic romance hold that thought.

Despite the similarities I had to give Archangel's Blade the extra half star because I enjoyed the characters and their romance more than I have the Raphael and Elena pairing. I think for a couple of reasons. The first being – I just like Dmitri more than Raphael. Both are supposed to be “dangerous”, but I parenthesize because I know they’re dangerous because Singh keeps telling me they're dangerous; which was good – because I love the dangerous hero trope – and I might have missed it had I not been so well informed. Raphael I think is supposed to be dangerous in his epic power, other-worldliness – and remoteness. I just find him too remote. Almost unrelatable. Dmitri is more down to earth. Then there’s the issue of maybe I just have some latent left over squickiness about angels as sex machines from my Catholic upbringing (And I'm not gonna lie - the wings are kind of freaky). Or maybe a vampire just seems more “bad boy". Not sure but I’m Team Dmitri.

The other aspect of AB that made me feel a more emotional connection to the characters and to their story – other people may not like. It may seem an over-used plot device – but I liked that Dmitri and Honor have a connection to each other from the past. It made their story more “believable” – in a totally unbelievable story about vampires and angels and an alternate reality sort of way.

The story kicks off with a tattooed severed vampire head being found floating in the Hudson River. The tattoo looks like an ancient Aramaic code; and Dmitri on behalf of the Tower calls in a consult from the Guild. Honor is deemed to be particularly well qualified for the task, and Sara is trying to eject her from the depths of the rare books section of the Guild Academy library where she has buried herself since her rescue, rocking back and forth and trying to ward off flashbacks.

AB sees both Dmitri and Honor confronting the horrors of their pasts. The severed head turns out to be Dmitri’s tragic and traumatic past reaching out to him over the centuries. Dmitri and Honor bond over hunting down and torturing the rogue vampires who took part in Honor’s abduction and assaults and pondering the nature of their intense attraction. There were a few Venom cameos (I hope, I hope he gets a story), Holly (Uram’s survivor) becomes "Sorrow" and the next story up is apparently Jason’s – which I’m feeling rather underwhelmed about.
This was an excellent, razor sharp, Incredible story about redemption for the thousand yr old vampire, that is the Archangel Raphael's right hand man. They've known each other a very long time and Dimitri is honored and trusted enough to be Raphael's First, in his trusted group of Seven. The Seven being a group of extraordinary angels and vampires that have chosen to serve the very powerful Archangel Raphael, the ruler of New York.

Dimitri's heart was ripped from him, in the most monstrous of ways, around the time he was Made vampire. He lost his family and it left him so utterly devastated, that he became a hollowed out shell of the man he used to be. He became the very scary, extremely lethal, instrument of death, for those he served. And for most of his life, that was Raphael. A thousand years later and Dimitri would still not allow another woman to become anywhere close to his heart. Being the sexual adventurer he's always been, he found out the many ways to bring pleasure and pain to both sexes. He was becoming desensitized to it all.
I usually really like all of Nalini' s books, but this one fell short for me. Spoiler! I am not into reincarnation, so the fact that the heroine, Honor, was Dimitri's wife from a thousand years ago but was also herself was just weird to me. I didn't like all the flashbacks to his time with his wife either. He needed to be falling in love with Honor, not thinking of his wife all the time. And Honor was dealing with getting over her horrible kidnapping and two month abuse to ever really be happy until the end. It was just pretty blah to me when it should have been great with such a strong hero. Disappointed. Hopefully the next one will be back on track and no more reincarnation.
