The Color of Bee Larkham Murder A Novel Sarah J Harris Books

I absolutely loved this book. I had read another book where the main character had synesthesia, one of the conditions the main character in this book has. Memory Man by David Baldacci, which is a great book as well. However this book is different in so many ways. The main character is a child with two other conditions as well, autism and prosopagnosia.
There is a murder mystery as well as a story about this boy, his Dad, his neighborhood and his love of birds. The story is told with heart, humor and a even a few tears. I was so involved, I sat and read all day, I could not stop reading. The author did a wonderful job of grabbing me in. Is there actually a whodunnit, and if so, well then who did it and why? I enjoyed this book so much, I highly recommend it.

The Color of Bee Larkham Murder A Novel Sarah J Harris Books Reviews

The Color of Bee Larkham's Murder is an original and fascinating murder mystery.

The narrator is 13 year old Jasper. The story is set in the UK.

Jasper is an intriguing and unusual narrator. First off he is only 13 years old. Usually that would mean that this was a Young Adult novel. However, the book does not feel like YA and it's not marketed that way.

Jasper has a bunch of things that make him very different. First he has synesthesia a condition that lets him see colors when he hears sounds. He also suffers from face blindness, which means that he can't tell people's faces apart. And he seemed to be autistic (his dad was reading a book about dealing with autistic children).

The main story has to do with a new neighbor, Bee Larkham, who has moved across the street from Jasper and his dad.

Bee is in her early twenties and has recently returned to her childhood home after her mom died. She has a tree filled with parakeets. And Jasper is completely obsessed with these birds.

Even though Jasper was 13 he read as someone much younger. His autism and other abilities added to this. He often did not understand what was happening around him. And he took everything literally.

The mystery aspect was enjoyable. Although I definitely preferred the last part of the book. There was a back and forth in time. The story was mostly set in the present. But then we also got to see from the time when Jasper first met Bee.

At first I could not decide how much I liked this book. The way Jasper sees colors for everything is described a lot. It definitely made the story completely unique. However at times it was a bit trying.

The last part of the book was the strongest. I was completely riveted. I was fascinated by by Jasper's inability to recognize faces. Especially how it impacted the story. Overall, this was such a different mystery.
"The Color of Bee Larkham's Murder" by Sarah J. Harris, Touchstone, June 12, 2018, 368 pages.

Jasper Wishart is 13. He has autism and synesthesia, which causes him to see colors when he hears sounds. He can't otherwise recognize people, but thinks of them related to what they are wearing, such as Dark Blue Baseball Cap Man.

Bee Larkham moves in to her late mother's home, to get it ready to sell. Jasper lives with his dad. His mother died when he was 9. He likes Bee because when she speaks, he sees blue. He saw cobalt blue when his mother spoke.

Bee teaches guitar and piano. Jasper loves birds, especially wild parakeets. Bee lets him come to her house to see the birds from her bedroom window because it is a better view. But neighbors have been complaining that the birds cause damage to their homes and because Bee plays loud music late at night. Then a man accuses Bee of sexually assaulting his son. Police start doing interviews.

During that investigation, Jasper confesses that he murdered Bee and that his father hid her body. He is called to the police station, but because of the synesthesia, he can't be a reliable witness.

This is a wonderful book reminiscent of Mark Haddon's "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" published in 2003, which is also excellent. While "Bee Larkham" is a mystery, it is more of a character study of the life of a boy with special needs. It is both funny and sad.

This is Sarah J. Harris' first adult novel. She writes young adult books under the pen name Sarah Sky.

It took me a bit to get into this story. The story unfolds though a child’s eyes who sees sounds in color. Took me a bit to understand what was really going on. I loved the characters and the twists the book took.
I loved this book and the premise although the writing was a little disjointed for me the story is definitely worth sticking around for. I learned about synesthesia which I wasn’t familiar with at all and the cast of likeable and unlikeable characters are perfectly balanced.
This is a fabulous novel. Written through the eye of an autistic youth who also perceives colors associated with words, this provides wonderful insight into different ways of perceiving the world. By the end of the book the reader is comfortable in his world, and it feels like an alternate view rather than a deficient one. I loved it!
