Spellbinding novel about how and why, exactly, wicked queens become wicked. In concept, a mashup of Rapunzel and Snow White, but so fully developed it feels like its own fairy tale, especially considering Turgeon's choice to make Rapunzel a powerful enchantress in her own right, before she ever even lets down her hair. It's a pleasure to watch Rapunzel's slow descent into evil, and Turgeon's ability to fully inhabit every moment of this novel--to make it sing with life and sensuality--is breathtaking. Fans of Gregory Maguire's WICKED and Marion Zimmer Bradley's THE MISTS OF AVALON, take note this one's for you!
Love this author. The Mermaid was the first book I read. This is a combination of Rapunzel andSnow White and ties the two tales together plausibly. A great read.
Interesting blending of two classic fairy tales.One of them is one of my favorites, thus I was curious to see how the author treated the charactors. She stayed pretty true to the plots of the stories. There were a few things I didn't like near the end of the story, but all in all I enjoyed reading it and would share it with other adult friends who enjoyed fantasy stories.
I was absolutely shocked by this book. It wasn't what I expected at all, but I loved it! The novel ties the stories of Rapunzel and Snow White together in one thrilling, seductive tale. I was totally absorbed and emotionally attached to the characters throughout the story. It's very sexual, and some of the violent parts are slightly graphic, but Carolyn Turgeon blew me away.
This is the story of Rapunzel who is the possessor of the magic mirror ("Mirror, Mirror etc"). She lives in the forest with her adopted mother who sells the usual herbal remedies and potions to love lorn women etc. and is called a 'witch'. Rapunzel wants to go to the fair held in the village near the castle but her mother locks her into the tower to protect her. Unfortunately, when her mother has gone to nurse someone, the handsome prince happens by, and the expected happens - he climbs Rapunzel's hair up to her tower and they become lovers. Sounds like the same old story, right? But not in Carolyn Turgeon's hands. She has the most luminous language, every description sings on the page. I read some bits several times because they sounded so delightful and perfect. She has her very own twist on the Anderson fairy tale and I loved every word.

I liked the premise of this book; the melding of Rupunzel and Snow White. I feel like portions of the book moved quicker than others and I felt tired of reading once Rupunzel got to the castle and had to deal with everyone saying she was a witch etc. I felt she kind of became a boring character at that point and I really had to push myself to keep reading. I’m glad I did though because I liked the ending and how she was able to turn everything around and put the kingdom before her jealous needs and wants. Although that incest thing was surprising, I didn’t see that coming. Overall I liked it but the middle portion lagged for me
