Once a Liar A Novel AF Brady Books
I was eager to read Once a Liar, as I had been very taken by AF Brady’s pre ious book The Blind.I was not disappointed, Peter Caine the creepy protagonist, is the person we all love to hate.
Brady’s particular talent is a narrative where the accumulation of minute details delineate the character. From the very first scene, at the funeral, Peter’s silent thoughts start us on the journey into his twisted character. This book works like a tapestry, a huge number of colored threads make a picture when we stand back and observe the whole.
I had no emotional allegiance to any of the characters but a silent wish that Sinai, who sounds awfully charming, had a bigger part.
This is an excellent read even to one such as myself who prefers non fiction.
I hope this talented writer will continue to keep me in page turning mode.

Once a Liar A Novel AF Brady Books Reviews
Narrated in first person by sociopath lawyer Peter Caine, Once a Liar by A. F. Brady is an absolutely compelling mystery.
Peter is a cold, calculating man whose every decision is based on how his choices benefit him. A completely remade, successful defense attorney, his marriage to Juliette ended not long after the birth of their only son, Jamie. Seeing little advantage to paying any attention to Jamie, Peter is content to ignore both son and ex-wife until tragedy strikes. After Jamie comes to live with him, Peter is still aloof and indifferent to the teenager and he leaves his live-in girlfriend Claire to parent the young man.
Peter has recently ended his long time, on again/off again relationship with Charlotte “Charlie” Doyle. However, after she is brutally murdered, suspicion falls on Peter. Fearing his simmering feud with District Attorney Harrison Doyle will result in his arrest, Peter and his partner/attorney Sinan Khan try to unearth evidence that will point to Charlie’s killer. Will Peter uncover the perpetrator’s identity before he arrested for Charlie’s murder?
Peter is an incredibly manipulative man who will do anything to succeed. Except for one memorable (and regrettable) time, he is also quite secretive and cagey about his past. At first completely enamored with Juliette, it does not take make for his love to turn to disdain. Although Peter makes no effort to hide his affair with Charlie during his marriage to Juliette, he is much more circumspect with Claire. He has been completely upfront and honest with Claire about what he does and does not want from their relationship. Fully aware that she has put aside her dream of having kids for him, he puts her yearning for motherhood to good use once Jamie comes to live with them. Having finally seen an advantage to being a parent, Peter’s attempts to get to know his son are rather awkward and stilted.
The investigation into Charlie’s murder immediately focuses on Peter. With a former client publicly pointing the finger at him, Peter is desperate to change the narrative in hopes of avoiding arrest. Despite his strenuous claims of innocence, it is impossible for Sinan to completely believe Peter. With the noose slowly tightening, Peter makes one last desperate attempt to clear his name. Will his plan succeed?
Once a Liar is a fiendishly clever and highly entertaining mystery. Peter is easy to hate as he carelessly breaks the hearts of the people who love him. With a series of stunning twists and diabolical turns, A. F. Brady keeps readers in suspense about who murdered Charlie and why until the novel’s shocking conclusion. A devilishly fascinating read that I absolutely loved and highly recommend to readers of the genre.
Sociopaths live among us, and most of the time we don’t know who they are, and this is what ONCE A LIAR is all about. This is not a gory tale of serial killers, of psychopaths, but of people almost, almost like you and me. ONCE A LIAR is an extremely well-crafted story that will keep you guessing until the very end, because I certainly had no idea how it would turn out. The author knows what she’s talking about, she doesn’t fabricate; the writing is clear and smooth; the characters are fascinating, if not the sort of people you wish to know. But then again, we might know someone just like them.
Because it is written in such a deceptive and matter-of-fact way, I feared that ONCE A LIAR might end sloppily, but seldom have I been caught so unawares. Told in the first person, from our very unreliable narrator Peter Caine, the narrative alternates between Now and Then. Don’t blink, don’t skip a chapter, don’t think that something doesn’t matter, because it will eventually. “Good things come to those who wait” has never been truer! Who needs boring old serial killers when sociopaths are so much more interesting! ONCE A LIAR was the book I was hoping to read, and it delivered mightily! Enjoy!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Peter Caine is not a nice man. You may even call him a sociopath which is perfect, really, for his job as a Manhattan defense attorney. He doesn't lose a wink of sleep when he acquits murderers, rapists, and pedophiles. Success, wealth, and recognition are the only things that Peter cares about.
Peter has an ex-wife, Juliette, a teenage son, Jamie, a current live in girlfriend, Claire, and a secret lover, Charlotte.
What happens when, Charlotte, Peter's longtime on-again off again lover, the reason his first marriage dissolved, and the reason his current girlfriend has given him the ultimatum, it's me or it's her, is violently murdered?
When you've amassed so many enemies it's not surprising that eventually someone would have an ax to grind. For Peter that time has come!
This is one of those books that I enjoyed thoroughly but it wasn't exactly a page turner. A slow burn that I savored. I thought that Peter was portrayed as a perfectly despicable character that I truly loved to hate. I adored Claire and felt so sorry for Juliette and Jamie. The ending was just perfect! A.F. Brady is a talented writer that I plan to keep my eye on. 4 stars!
Thank you to NetGalley & Harlequin Trade Publishing for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Excellent book, brilliant read. I looked forward to Brady’s second book and it didn’t disappoint.
