Dmitri’s book….I thought that his character had the most growth potential so far and I was not wrong. Were/Are you scared to read Dmitri’s book because in the first three he seemed like an unapologetic arrogant ass? I mean his actions thus far towards Elena have made him questionable in my eyes but then there is that fierce devotion to Raphael he has so I always felt that he couldn’t be all bad.

Well well well I was not disappointed. Dmitri is a complex character with a pretty heart wrenching backstory that explains

❶ - Why Raphael and he are so tight and have complete trust in each other.

❷ - Why he has been throwing his scent around toward Elena and altering between trying to seduce her or kill her.

❸ - What happened to the family and children he once had.

I was captivated by this story that is so much darker than the prior ones. When Dmitri meets Honor the Hunter assigned to help him capture a foe thought long dead he feels a spark that he hasn’t felt for a women in over a millennia. Honor has her own dark story and abuse to overcome. She was held hostage by a group of vampires for their ‘enjoyment’ and is still dealing with the PTSD she is suffering from that.

I liked Honor and how hard she started to work to put her life back together after hiding out for almost a year after her tragic attack. She was a strong woman who went through a horrible tragedy so it was easy to see why she and Dmitri would connect on some fundamental level as details from his past surfaced too. You could tell that even as he was being hard on Honor he was actually helping her deal with the residual issues she was having.

“Those who say vengeance eats you up are wrong—it doesn’t, not if you do it right.”

Being in Dmitri’s head also helped understand his motivations better and now I actually like the strange way he is working to help Elena to become a stronger consort and mate for Raphael. Please don’t think for a second that he is all sunshine and rainbows and kittens. He definitely isn’t, he is still brutal, hard and not mortal. But I know get the places that everything about him comes from and I really liked his dark and twisted story.

“Ever had a woman say no to you, Dmitri?”
“Once.” He turned the corner with a smile that made her want to cup his face, trace those beautiful lips with her own. “I married her.”

Add to that a little more development for a few other side characters and this is my favorite story from this world so far. I’m pretty sure I know who Venom will be matched up with later and since she threatened to chop his head off I will really enjoy that courtship when it happens. There was also a little more on the guild hunter Ashwini and the Vampire that is currently pursuing her. It does appear that Vampire courtships are aggressive and maybe a bit violent but definitely never boring.

I don’t want to say that I didn’t like Raphael and Elena’s story so far because I did but it was really nice to get a broader few of the world from a few other character PoVs in the story. I look forward to discovering Jason’s story next.

Archangel Blade A Guild Hunter Novel Nalini Singh 9780425243916 Books Reviews

4 ½ stars

The central romance and main characters of Archangel's Blade are Dmitri, leader of Raphael’s Seven and Honor St. Nicholas, a non- hunter-born human hunter. In a lot of ways Dmitri and Honor felt like Raphael and Elena 2.0. Strong, resilient, independent and deeply traumatized female lead check. Honor is fresh from a two month abduction and captivity in which she was repeatedly physically and sexually assaulted by a gang of rogue vampires (well, not an actual “gang”; but several rogue vampires). “Dangerous”, jaded, emotionally unavailable/remote, immortal and also deeply traumatized (eons ago) male lead check. Unlikely wham bam thank you ma'am epic romance hold that thought.

Despite the similarities I had to give Archangel's Blade the extra half star because I enjoyed the characters and their romance more than I have the Raphael and Elena pairing. I think for a couple of reasons. The first being – I just like Dmitri more than Raphael. Both are supposed to be “dangerous”, but I parenthesize because I know they’re dangerous because Singh keeps telling me they're dangerous; which was good – because I love the dangerous hero trope – and I might have missed it had I not been so well informed. Raphael I think is supposed to be dangerous in his epic power, other-worldliness – and remoteness. I just find him too remote. Almost unrelatable. Dmitri is more down to earth. Then there’s the issue of maybe I just have some latent left over squickiness about angels as sex machines from my Catholic upbringing (And I'm not gonna lie - the wings are kind of freaky). Or maybe a vampire just seems more “bad boy". Not sure but I’m Team Dmitri.

The other aspect of AB that made me feel a more emotional connection to the characters and to their story – other people may not like. It may seem an over-used plot device – but I liked that Dmitri and Honor have a connection to each other from the past. It made their story more “believable” – in a totally unbelievable story about vampires and angels and an alternate reality sort of way.

The story kicks off with a tattooed severed vampire head being found floating in the Hudson River. The tattoo looks like an ancient Aramaic code; and Dmitri on behalf of the Tower calls in a consult from the Guild. Honor is deemed to be particularly well qualified for the task, and Sara is trying to eject her from the depths of the rare books section of the Guild Academy library where she has buried herself since her rescue, rocking back and forth and trying to ward off flashbacks.

AB sees both Dmitri and Honor confronting the horrors of their pasts. The severed head turns out to be Dmitri’s tragic and traumatic past reaching out to him over the centuries. Dmitri and Honor bond over hunting down and torturing the rogue vampires who took part in Honor’s abduction and assaults and pondering the nature of their intense attraction. There were a few Venom cameos (I hope, I hope he gets a story), Holly (Uram’s survivor) becomes "Sorrow" and the next story up is apparently Jason’s – which I’m feeling rather underwhelmed about.
This was an excellent, razor sharp, Incredible story about redemption for the thousand yr old vampire, that is the Archangel Raphael's right hand man. They've known each other a very long time and Dimitri is honored and trusted enough to be Raphael's First, in his trusted group of Seven. The Seven being a group of extraordinary angels and vampires that have chosen to serve the very powerful Archangel Raphael, the ruler of New York.

Dimitri's heart was ripped from him, in the most monstrous of ways, around the time he was Made vampire. He lost his family and it left him so utterly devastated, that he became a hollowed out shell of the man he used to be. He became the very scary, extremely lethal, instrument of death, for those he served. And for most of his life, that was Raphael. A thousand years later and Dimitri would still not allow another woman to become anywhere close to his heart. Being the sexual adventurer he's always been, he found out the many ways to bring pleasure and pain to both sexes. He was becoming desensitized to it all.
I usually really like all of Nalini' s books, but this one fell short for me. Spoiler! I am not into reincarnation, so the fact that the heroine, Honor, was Dimitri's wife from a thousand years ago but was also herself was just weird to me. I didn't like all the flashbacks to his time with his wife either. He needed to be falling in love with Honor, not thinking of his wife all the time. And Honor was dealing with getting over her horrible kidnapping and two month abuse to ever really be happy until the end. It was just pretty blah to me when it should have been great with such a strong hero. Disappointed. Hopefully the next one will be back on track and no more reincarnation.
I read this book during a time of great stress in my life, and it made me happy the way the Harry Potter series made me happy. My Nephew said I needed a good adventure: "here aunt Reba, you like owls!" And I do! Have one tattooed on my arm - LOL - Ok, not a relevant side note but.... Anyway, the book is a great deal of fun and it offers a wonderful adventure and a beautiful friendship between a young boy and a young girl trying to change their world - a dark, dark place. The book is a little dark in places, but that's partly what makes this book so good - and the story so compelling. The only drawback is that there was no part two or three or four .... it is not part of a series. I can't help but wonder, as a reader: why not? Christine Brodien-Jones, really why not??? Consider continuing with this venture -- If you need a reader .... I would be happy to oblige!

The Owl Keeper Christine BrodienJones Maggie Kneen 9780385738149 Books Reviews

I think it was a good book, but it was transparent in a way that I could tell what would happen next.
There were a few things that I didn't like. I was an interesting story. There were a lot of twists.
Great for everyone. Mystery, fighting, owls and freedom fighters. Good for kids and adults alike. Took place in 2066. Five stars .
What a lovely book. Written for the young reader I enjoyed it just as much as an adult. Orwellian fantasy; good vs. evil; and children & owls who save the day. I love owls - everything about them so I was drawn to this book because of that. The cover art is beautiful so I bought hard copy instead of the kindle version.
The Owl Keeper was a delightful read. After turning the last page I was left with a feeling of hope for humanity. The descriptions are full and well written allowing the reader to get an image of this world of good and evil. Hope to see more by the author.
I enjoyed every word in this post-apocalyptal fantasy. While this dark new universe is not a pretty picture, there is no shortage of beauty, hope, and familial loyalty in this imaginative tale.

I am an adult who loves futuristic subject matter and found this to be right up there with Margaret Atwood in terms of innovation and vivid imagery. Brodien-Jones has created a world you want to watch in this fast-paced cautionary tale.

The little heroic owl is peace personified. Her survival in an increasingly vicious world is at the center of the story for Max and Rose, the two young warriors. These two unwittingly evolve into brave soldiers who embark on a frightening journey filled with close calls, slimy creatures and deteriorating landscapes. One wonders why anyone would want to live in such a world. The hateful High Echelon "government" is interested in robotic devotion and will use any means to wipe out independent thought. Thank goodness there are rebels like Max, Rose, and their serene white owl who fight for the right to be themselves.

More please.
I really enjoyed this book. It kept me guessing and reading well into the night. It does get a bit dark in theme but it's relevant to the story. Excellent writing and editing!
Book Review Tuesday, March 11, 2014

The Bell Witch Unveiled At Last: The True Story of a Poltergeist by DJ Lyons

If you are looking for a serious investigation into the Bell Witch mystery that took place in Adams, TN from 1817 to 1821, this isn’t the book. Let us get that out of the way immediately. Thus my advice on reading a sample before buying. I should have done this, but I did not.

Most of the salient facts of the case are included in this book but are hard to trace through the confusion of multiple first person accounts made by spirits of the primary characters being channeled through the author, Ms DJ Lyons.

This book is about new age, or I suppose I should say old age, ideas of Earth Goddess, Spiritualism, Channeling, Transmigration of Souls, Multiple past and future lives, and the balance or imbalance of Nature. This is not really my cup of tea, but if you are interested in any of the above, this book should fit the bill.

Despite not being the type of stuff I believe or even with which I associate myself, I confess I found the book hard to put down. Hi DJ from Teresa,
I just finished your book! And....,Wow!

I hear your voice, your mannerisms so clearly. Now I see why you were the perfect teacher for Conflict Resolution.

My favorite chapter is 77. I feel that this chapter better helped me to learn forgiveness.

My least favorite chapter is 81, Betsy Bell and Joshua. I do not like to hear about child abuse. When it is in the news, when I learn about it from friends who it happen to, I am sad. I am glad that I have not had this experience, but somehow, I internalize their suffering. Somehow, when I read about the abuse to Cate, I expected that. Knowing how strong Cate was, I knew that with her powers, she could succumb. However, I felt different for Betsy...she was so young.

DJ, there is so much more I could say. This is the first book I have read where multiple people speak in first person. I believe you. I believe what you have written. I think I understand your message and purpose for this book. To me, it goes deeper than solving the mystery. Again, I refer to Chap. 77. As one is led through the events, through the dialogue, one begins to understand the underlying message which must be your purpose on this Earth Plane. Do I have it right?
July 19, 2008
Review of The Bell Witch Unveiled at Last!

All of my life, I have heard the story of the infamous Bell Witch of current day Adams,
Tennessee. I have heard the story many times and in many different ways, but the most prevalent factor in all stories is that Kate (Cate) Batts was the cause of the "witching" and that she was solely responsible for sending old John Bell to his maker. So, when I learned of the book, The Bell Witch Unveiled at Last by D.J. Lyons, it was like a breath of fresh air. The book's sole purpose- to give a voice to the disenfranchised Cate Batts, who has been a whipping post for far too long. The book brings the legend to life in a very interesting way- through the words of Cate Batts herself.

The book paints a image of Batts that the reader can now associate with the legend. Cate Batts is no longer a faceless feature, but made alive by Lyons to tell her own tale, and by doing so, discloses the true identity of the mysterious Bell Witch.

Hold on to your pants, reader, because Cate Batts will take you for a ride back in time, to the small town of Adams, Tennessee and the home of the Bell Witch!

Adam T. Southern, Reference Librarian
Maury County Public Library System
Columbia, Tennessee
Note to self, and to everyone reading this review always download a sample before downloading the full book. I suppose I should have known from the title what this would be like, but the three 5-star reviews-- apparently written by braindead and/or illiterate people-- convinced me to download this drivel. I wish I could get my money back.

I didn't finish this because it was so bad. It COULD have been good if

1) it didn't read as if it had been written by a middle schooler, with short, choppy, and awkward sentences and an overuse of exclamation points. I can only guess that DJ Lyons, whose real name is Debbie Dunn, is a better storyteller than a writer.

2) It hadn't been so silly, e.g. Cate's supposed psychic abilities and a lot of New Age garbage (Cate can see her past and future lives... really? Whatever).

3) It had actually had some historical accuracy. It's NOT history, it's not a true account; it is a very badly-written fantasy story that is loosely based on the actual events.

The only thing "true" about this book, from what I read of it, is that you should not pay your hard-earned money on it. If you're interested in the real story, read the actual account of the family, "An Authenticated Account of the Bell Witch" by M.V. Ingram. The version is only $.99 as opposed to the cow flop that I wasted $15 on.

Bullet Anita Blake Vampire Hunter Laurell K Hamilton 9780425234334 Books

I've read all the preceding books in the series and this one was the worst of the lot. Unfortunately, the series has drifted away from its mystery/action core and settled into more of a pornographic series. The emphasis is less on the character, less on what seems to have been the overall plot, and more on the sex and the heroines inner struggles over her many relationships. All to say, boring and tiresome. And from the reviews of the following titles in this series, the porno focus continues to grow while all other plot lines diminish. So, I'm finished with this series.

Bullet Anita Blake Vampire Hunter Laurell K Hamilton 9780425234334 Books Reviews

When I first read this book I did not review it because I thought it was by far her worst book yet. After rereading all her books again to prepare for the release of Kiss the Dead I deceided to do a review. The story of Anita Blake has always been one of my favorite supernatural series. The thing I dislike about the series now is the constant need to claim her character is always a monster or sex craved. I believe the ardeur was the downfall of the series. It was alright when she first introduced the idea but then it was more and more men and sex. Then the constant belief in herself that she is a monster and a slut. Then the other cops or marshalls comments on her being a slut or her need to have her boyfriends around all the time. The only advice I can give LKH is if you want the ardeur in the book then accept what has happened with the characters and at least stop having Anita's character making comments that she can't sleep with another person or she is a bad person because of it. It is just getting old. As for the book I can not really give a plot or idea about the book it was everywhere. You have Anita killing people, saving people, working out with her guards ( and of course being faster and stronger than them ) and you even have her having sex with a woman which she never would have done before since she does not like women to even hug her. Also JC and Richard have sex with a woman in front of Anita. All this is a contradiction to the characters in past books. Very annoying and nothing like I expected of the book.
Mommy Dearest is back in Bullet. In this one Anita and all her men are up against the council who have been taken over by mommy dearest and she is trying to kill Anita bc she has not been able to take her over by her self. We also learn that the golden tigers are still out there and they are coming to St. Louis to be with Anita. This is good a good book and part of a good series.
So this book was great for the basic storyline and to connect the before and after books, but 70% of it could be erased and we'd be left with the same substance plus some sex fluff. I skipped this and about 7 other books because although I love a good sex scene (and these weren't that good... basic smut), I still like substance to my "no thinking required" books. I have finally gone back to pick up these missing links and have resigned myself to just get past the cheap sex. If you read Laurell for smut, this should work for you. If you follow the story, yuppie can pick up a few gems in here. She's talented, but I think she was distracted and under pressure to meet deadlines.
I've read all of Laurell K Hamilton's Anita Blake, the Vampire Hunter and Merry Gentry series books several times. I have them in hardback and paperback. Now I'm getting them in ebook, kindle form. The books are so entertaining that each time I read them I admire the author more. So creative, fun, detailed, exciting and fast paced. I know the books but each reread is still amazing and engrossing. This book is the starting point of Anita excepting the ardeur because of the power she gains from it to help those she loves. When she isn't fighting bigots, chauvinist and her inner demons she's kicking bad little vampire butts because she's the Vampire Executioner.
I almost always enjoy Anita Blake books, and this was was no exception. I've read this one several times over the years and still am engaged in the story as an observer, feeling a lot of Anita's angst about the changes and decisions she's forced to make, and watching her mature as a necromancer and a woman. The European Contingent arrives earlier than plans and chaos and havoc ensue. A shapeshifting foreigner is serially killing people.A
And Richard continues to be so self-interest that he nearly is responsible for other's deaths. Other than a bit too much detail in the intimate scenes, the book is a great addition to Anita's life story.
In the beginning I just loved Anita and her stories. The last 6-7 books have been utterly disappointing. Bullet, is in my opinion, the worst of them all. The character arc Hamilton has made my beloved Anita go through is terrible. There was one sex scene in this book that literally took up 25% of the entire book!!!! And then right after there were about 10 pages describing what everyone was wearing after they showered. The latest books in this series are a hypersexed romance novel with some scant police work thrown in as an afterthought. It doesn't matter how gorgeous everyone involved is, I feel really bad for Anita having to be screwing so many people constantly. And the fact that Anita is "deeply in love" with so many people at one time is ridiculous, given her initial personality. Jean Claude, Richard, Asher, Micah, and Nathaniel. Good lord, I understand maybe loving two at one time, but no one can be "in love" with that many all at once.

Hamilton should retire this series,,,or start writing them like she did in the beginning. I miss Anita describing Edward flamethrowing some rogue vamp to death, or raising an entire cemetery of zombies. I understand giving Anita ONE person finally to love, but to have her constantly sleeping in a naked pile of people because it's a metaphysical "need" is abhorrent to me. If early Anita met her own author, I bet she'd kick Hamilton's rear end.

I've read Hamilton being annoyed with people's recent critiques on her work. Don't care, lady. Stop doing this to my Anita.

The Circle Dave Eggers 8601411195594 Books

*Warning: Spoilers*

“The Circle” makes some important points about timely issues such as the end of privacy (already upon us), totalitarianism/monopolies, the power of “groupthink” and delusion, and the weaknesses of governments that are incestuously linked to private corporations. However, I found myself skimming through parts where it got bogged down. On one hand, Eggers’ attention to detail is impressive and extremely conscientious. For instance, he details the Circle’s elaborate system of success metrics (a combination of performance and social media rankings) that eerily parallels today’s times. But he also spent a lot of time describing the mechanics of Mae’s job as a customer service rep, and I’m not sure there was a point to having to digest all those specifics. I think a talented editor could have honed this manuscript down to 300 pages instead of 500, while still making the main points.

I also found it odd that Mae (the protagonist) did not undergo a major character transformation, since most novels follow that formula. Mae is sort of a “flat character” with little emotional depth. I kept hoping Mae would see the error of the Circle’s philosophy and her acceptance of it. But maybe the point is that good people can find themselves embroiled in ultimately bad things due to a lack of awareness and insight. Mae is, after all, only in her 20s. Perhaps she just lacks the wisdom and empathy that come with age and experience. Yet Mae’s character flaws – megalomania and self-delusion – seem deeply ingrained in her psyche (e.g., her refusal to admit to herself how her behavior resulted in the death of someone close to her).

As Mae and the other Circlers approach “completion,” ironically, the people in Mae’s inner circle – her parents, her best friend, her ex-boyfriend – begin dropping out of her life. It serves as a cautionary tale about how obsession and delusion can lead to the destruction of what’s most important to us.

The Circle Dave Eggers 8601411195594 Books Reviews

Mae Holland is thrilled when she gets hired at the world famous company The Circle. The Circle is the leader of technological advances and has basically monopolized the use of the internet and social media. In addition, they strive to streamline daily activities, so they found a way to integrate all social media accounts, payment options, purchase history, etc to create a single online identity.

In this new age of transparency, Mae is excited to see what else The Circle comes up with…until she has a strange interaction with a coworker who talks of the problems the lack of privacy can cause. The Circle is a book full of technological innovations, suspense, and moral questions, and I couldn’t get enough of it.

I really had a hard time putting The Circle down. I was immediately engaged with the story and completely fascinated by the inventions the company had created – many of which would be convenient to have today.

Part of what I loved about the book is how much it made me question the stance on privacy and anonymity. There were so many inventions and programs that The Circle wanted to implement that I could see as being both helpful but also a total removal of privacy, and I often questioned if the pros outweighed the cons.

I had a really hard time rating the book because while I loved the writing and learning more about the goals of The Circle including the inventions they wanted to make, I kept expecting something crazy to happen – some big event, similar to the way the story went with Divergent. That was not the case with The Circle, and I went back and forth on whether or not I felt it was missing something. Ultimately, I landed at 4.5 stars, and rounded up to 5 stars, specifically because I couldn’t put the book down and when I wasn’t reading it, I was definitely thinking about it.

I’ve read other reviews that said that they hated the ending. I actually liked it. By the end of the book, I had no doubts as to how it would end, and I liked that. I think the ending was absolutely what would happen in real life, regardless of whether or not I liked it, so I appreciated that it wasn’t necessarily a “happily ever after” ending with all loose ends tied up.

I liked Mae as the main character as much as I wanted to shake her sometimes! She definitely made some bad choices and occasionally struggled with her self worth. She tied a lot of what she felt about herself into what others thought of her. As much as it’s hard to read that, Mae is 24 and I don’t know many 24 year olds who don’t care at all what their peers think of them – I know I didn’t when I was 24. Hell, as much as I hate to admit it, I still struggle with not caring with what people thought of me, so honestly, that felt realistic to me.

All in all, I really enjoyed the book, and it made me think a lot about the world we live in today. Many of The Circle’s innovations felt like things I could actually see happening in real life, which made the book all the more creepy. This is definitely one I’d recommend for fans of the dystopian genre and anyone interested in the extremes the “selfie culture” could take. While this wasn’t a traditional “hard core” dystopian where the world is completely different than the one we live in, I think it still falls in this category. When all is said and done, this is still a book that’s on my mind as I fall asleep at night.
*Warning Spoilers*

This is a good book to teach you how to identify controlling people in your life. It also gives steps on how to break free from their power. It comes from a Christian perspective. I would recommend it.
This book has good examples of situations that are controlling, so you can be sure if you are not, that you are being controlled and what you can do about it. I've had my kindle read it to me twice. It has also helped my co-worker with an issue at my work place.
Good book for anyone who is being controlled by others, or people who are control freaks. Gives why, and what to do about it.

Heir of Fire Throne of Glass Sarah J Maas Books

Okay, truth...my daughter is 10 and in the 5th grade. Grandpa, an avid reader like myself, went out on a limb and bought the book for her last Easter. We struggle to find books that are in her 8.4-9.5 reading level, have age appropriate content with a plot she has the life experiences to connect to and comprehend, that are also challenging AND interest her...tall order. We have read all the popular series - adore Harry Potter, of course; tore through the "Greggor the Overlander" series, etc. - so even though in previewing the series I noticed it contains some very minor-vanilla...no F-bombs or S$$T level, mature-type language, and there are a couple scenes that hint at an intimate relationship in book 2 (trying not to spoil books), I gave the book a green light. We started reading it together, taking turns reading aloud, and were BOTH immediately, read 30-40 pages at a time, wake up needing to see what happens to Celena, come home from school hoping to fit in a read and "see what Celena has gotten up to now" before dance, hooked like I have never seen her before!!! And while she is an awesome reader, she is not, by any means a sit & read person, preferring to dance, sing, socialize, game, etc...yet another challenge to add to the list. The challenged are important to note because the way Maas has crafted the characters has achieved what NO OTHER series has for my daughter, and that is to draw her in to the point she NEEDS to keep reading, every single day. The characters are beautifully developed to the point where my daughter was crying when she thought her favorite character died, and was angry at who did die. Maas has painstaking developed 3-dimensional characters that are ever evolving, and that are relatable to all ages. She has also created an entirely new setting that is similar enough to other books of the same genre, like Hunger Games (she has read/watched all), yet it is entirely new & fresh. The writing is clear & thought-provoking, and she weaves in asides & flashbacks that challenge and engage readers. We have had the most incredible conversations and my daughter has made multiple connections to other texts, movies, life, and especially music/song lyrics while reading. These connections are the reason I personally & professionally recommend the series to children beginning at age 10 who are reading at a 6.5-7+ grade level, primarily due to the challenging vocabulary. The twists and turns, the co afflicts & themes, character interactions, vivid & selected detailing, and obviously careful/thoughtful word choices make this series, in my opinion, an award winning, best selling series. As a reading specialist and 18 year veteran teacher of struggling readers, I fully give not just this book, but the entire series 5 stars! I could rave on and on...but I don't want to give away a single detail and only, sincerely hope what I have shared has piqued your curiosity enough to give the series a try yourself, along with a loved one, and that through sharing our personal experiences with the books I have helped answer the question of reader age appropriateness & interest level. Buckle up...it's a wild, wonderful ride through Adarlan!
Added info for Book 2...
Please note: I am reading the series aloud with my daughter, so as we go we just naturally, out of habit, change cuss words to "gosh" and "darn.," and the intimacy scenes were handled as follows: "A., this next chapter has Choal and Celeana interacting like a married couple sometimes do in private. Shall we read or skip?" Reply, "Well, um is it very like detailed?" Me: "Nah, it's pretty vague." A: "Well, I know she shouldn't be doing that stuff because they are not married, but let's just read it...it's not like I'm embarrassed or going to act like that myself...ewwww!" (Love the sweetness this age!) Basically, here is my point and yes I have one... if you take the time to first, preview what you will read with your child later; second, spend the time to read aloud with your child; third, talk to your child & maintain open dialogue, all the time, about everything, just as though they are the adults-in-training they really are (not saying talk like you are buddies, peers, or equals), the content of a fictional novel is not going to become controversial or be outrageous to them, throwing them into a tizzy of misadventure and exploits! So yes, while, the series is for ages 14+, I still maintain that WITH parental supervision/accompaniment, this is an incredible series to read together!

Heir of Fire Throne of Glass Sarah J Maas Books Reviews

I believe I'm going to have a love-hate relationship with this series. I'm breezing through them rather quickly, and yet I'm not LOVING them the way I feel like I should. I recall hearing that this was "A Song of Fire and Ice for the younger set" and I was rather excited about that idea. It doesn't quite seem to be that, though.

This novel was rather hard for me to read. It suffered from Second Book Syndrome - a lot going on and being explained and yet not a lot happening. I like the lore and fantasy elements that are coming into focus, however a lot of the elements felt messy and thrown together.

I must admit that I'm also still rather indifferent when it comes to Celaena and Chaol. Celaena is still vain, shallow, selfish, and oddly unintelligent for the greatest assassin in the land. Chaol is increasingly annoying, ignorant, and pompous. Maybe they are made for each other. Or maybe they are a bit too much. I felt a bit like the romance really took over the novel. I wanted a lot more world building and just got a whole lot of romance.

Really, it's the story of the past and the fantasy elements that are keeping my interest. I'm really hoping as more characters come into the picture, I'll have more stories to be interested in.
Well, holy cow. I don't even know where to start...

This book. This series. These characters. THIS AUTHOR.

We are in full on queen mode in Queen of Shadows, obviously. Hence the title. Calaena shows up some, for the sake of appearances, but she has completely accepted her heritage and now goes by Aelin. She's still the intense, no nonsense, scary-as-heck chick we've all grown to know and love, but there's tons more to her character that we only got a glimpse of in Heir of Fire. She's ready to go and taking names. Like literally taking names as she crosses the ocean back to Adarlan. Her cockiness and downright meanness in the first two books really rubbed me the wrong way at times. You can't help but to be drawn to her character, but the things she said and did were.. disturbing, to say the least. And she still has that fire, but there is so much more depth to her now that she has accepted who she truly is and, in the process, is opening her heart again to the people she loves instead of shutting them out and running off of pure rage. Her complexity makes her one of the best female protagonists I've ever read.

We start out back in Rifthold, and at this point everything is up in the air. We know why she's there and who she's after, but how she's going to go about doing this is anyone's guess. I will say this, A LOT gets resolved in this book. Granted, there are plenty of other monumental surprises that step into take their place, but I was surprised by how many plot lines got tied up. I was expecting two for sure, but the third one threw me for a complete loop. If anyone says they predicted that to happen, they are a liar. And my goodness, these last two books are going to be downright scary. I was on pins and needles the entire time. You thought present Erilea was bad.. it's about to get wayyyy worse.

And as for the book being 650 pages.. Why are people upset about this?! I say, the more the better!

Now onto the other characters, because there are quite a few POVs in this book...

I've always been partial to Dorian, so being in his POV was absolute torture. The ending of HoF about sent me over the edge and I didn't even want to think about what what was going to happen in this book. I was a nervous wreck. And then PAGE ONE happens. Like, literally as soon as I open the book, there it is. Chapter One. Pretty sure my heart dropped into my stomach. And then every time we were back in his POV after that. I did not handle it well. I hate Valg demons.

And while I've never particularly liked Chaol's character (I know I'm in the minority here), he sort of takes on a whole new persona in QoS. Maybe it's the fact of what all he's given up and how he sees the world changing that makes him into the person he's become. He's always seemed to me like a guy who is scared of change, and has an incredible ability to pick and choose which parts of people to accept. And I'm not just talking about Aelin, but also the king and Dorian. He sees only what he wants to see, and if he doesn't understand it or like it, he just shuts it out completely. He doesn't like magic. He's scared of it. He's also very scared of what will happen if people with magic have free reign again. We've known this since Crown of Midnight so I'm not sure why his continuing dislike of it surprises anyone. Chao is not going to be the same person he's been for the first three books. His life has completely change, so while his character is infuriating to me at times, he's still a vital part of this story and I don't dislike him. His character, by the end of this book, grows leaps and bounds and I was glad to see it happen.

Now for Rowan. Ah, Rowan. I still don't know how Sarah Maas did it. She gave us Dorian and Chaol in the first two books and everyone was on their respective team. Then in one book, ONE BOOK, she made me toss all my loyalties aside fall in love with Rowan's character. How anyone can not like him is beyond me. He's like the male version of Aelin, and the interaction between those two are some of the best dialogue of the book and they just work very well together. With his character showing up in Rifthold, you see him having to adjust to life without magic. And as the bond between them grows, you see different, softer sides of the Fae warrior. I love him.

We didn't get too much from Aedion in this book apart from the first few chapters as he awaits his execution. His reunion with Aelin was everything I thought it would be.. I ain't ashamed to say I may have teared up a bit. They are the only bit of family each other has left and they totally had their moment. It was perfect.

Manon's POV scares me. (Besides Abraxos, because who doesn't love Abraxos?) She is dark and wicked and infuriatingly loyal to that wretched grandmother of hers. I know she's redeemable, but for a good chunk of the book I was hoping Asterin would just overthrow her and become the new heir.. assuming that's how it works. Which it probably doesn't. BUT Manon has some feels going on that she's not even aware of and I think in this next book she will most definitely have to make a choice of which side she is on. It very well could've happened in this book, but we have no resolution where this is concerned. And that scene with Aelin.. on the edge of your seat stuff right there. I'm not sure how I feel about some illusions of her character, but I'm not completely against her playing an even bigger role in the last two books.

I'm not even going to spend time on Arobynn because I hate him. But some of the other characters, I loved. Calaena has been surrounded by a troupe of men for far too long and it's about time the women came out to play and they did not disappoint! Lysandra, wow. Love her. So much more to her character than meets the eye, and her and Aelin's relationship was refreshing. Nesryn, even though we don't get anything from her perspective is also a pretty bad chick and helping Chaol with the rebels. It's safe to say, unless you're in denial, you will know why she's there from the get go. And lastly, Elide, Lady Marion's daughter, is brought into the picture and hanging with the witches, no less. Very much excited about what role she will be playing in the future. She's got some surprises in store, I think.

For the most part, the book felt like long build-ups. Part one was a build-up and it was resolved. Part two also felt like a build-up, and it wasn't as cleanly resolved as the first. I still have some lingering questions about that. Prepare yourselves for part two. Big time game changer coming your way.

AllI can say, is that if you truly love this series, and I mean disregard the romances and all that, and are in love with the story, this book will not disappoint.

Some spoilers ahead...

I'm going to rant just for a sec. I keep seeing some low to mid reviews on this book and they all have one thing in common Chaol Westfall. I know people shipped Calaena and Chaol really hard, but being this distraught over the downfall of their romantic relationship does a disservice to this series. And I can say that because I am completely Team Dorian and have had to put up with Chaol from day on. Not to mention Sorscha from HoF. Was not a fan of that little surprise. Never once have I given these books bad reviews simply because things weren't happening the way I wanted them to. If the romance aspect is your biggest concern, go read romance novels. The growth and maturity of the characters is wonderful, and I'm glad that Maas is not scared to kill off characters we love or sever relationships if it means progressing the story to where it needs to go. I'm completely okay with the direction Aelin and Rowan are headed because they work. Even if in my heart of hearts I had this small hope of King Dorian and Queen Aelin falling love... yada yada yada... Rowan is the dude and I'm okay with that. So if all you're going to do is get on here and rant about, "I want the old Calaena back," "Maas completely ruined Chaol's character," "These books are too long," Guess what? Go read another series! Or some watered down YA novel where everything works out just as it should in the end.

These books are gold. Sarah Maas is a genius. And you can't convince me otherwise.
Please note I am reading the series aloud with my daughter, so as we go we just naturally, out of habit, change cuss words to "gosh" and "darn.," and the intimacy scenes were handled as follows "A., this next chapter has Choal and Celeana interacting like a married couple sometimes do in private. Shall we read or skip?" Reply, "Well, um is it very like detailed?" Me "Nah, it's pretty vague." A "Well, I know she shouldn't be doing that stuff because they are not married, but let's just read it...it's not like I'm embarrassed or going to act like that myself...ewwww!" (Love the sweetness this age!) Basically, here is my point and yes I have one... if you take the time to first, preview what you will read with your child later; second, spend the time to read aloud with your child; third, talk to your child & maintain open dialogue, all the time, about everything, just as though they are the adults-in-training they really are (not saying talk like you are buddies, peers, or equals), the content of a fictional novel is not going to become controversial or be outrageous to them, throwing them into a tizzy of misadventure and exploits! So yes, while, the series is for ages 14+, I still maintain that WITH parental supervision/accompaniment, this is an incredible series to read together!
Being a huge clutz I just loved this one. A heroine I can relate to and a love interest anyone would love to have.
I enjoyed this series of books. Easy reading and fun.
A Good Read
The writing was the same, the world and all the fun supervillain stuff, but it lacked something. I didn't find the superhero vs his alter ego believable. Nor did I like the fact she only felt a connection to his regular ego once she made the superhero connection. But if there's a fourth I will check it out.
Wild Cards has a better back story, and less sex, but I find Bigtime to be a lot of fun. I wonder which superhero will be next to find love?
These books are light, fun and easy reads. I really just think of them as long comic books. They are silly and allow me to turn off my brain and just enjoy. A little drama is in there, but I can't take it too seriously when dealing with superheroes and uber-villains on every page. And while some of the characters have traits that annoy, they're not enough to turn me off the series.
This is another good book in the series. I liked Bella although she did worry a little too much toward the end.
Love Big-time stories & wish she was gonna write more. My only problem with Jennifer Estep is I "Hate" stories written in 1st person.

American Wife A Novel Curtis Sittenfeld 9781400064755 Books

My actual review is somewhere between 3 and 4 stars. Sometimes I really liked this book and I really liked the main character, Alice. Other times, mostly toward the end, I wanted to yell "We got it! Fame is hard!" I added this book after reading that Alice was inspired by Laura Bush. Obviously I'm not the first person to look at this quiet, thoughtful, former librarian wind up with George W. Bush of all people. American Wife closely mirrors the events of the former first lady's life from childhood until her husband's second term in office. Most of her decisions in adulthood, revolve around a tragic accident during her teen years, in which a boy she was enamored with was killed.

I have to say I often found this book uncomfortable to read. Mainly because I found myself relating to the character of Alice quite a lot. So even when she was making decisions that I wouldn't necessarily have made, I understood them. Needless to say this was rather jarring for a dyed-in-the-wool liberal to find herself relating to a character's decision to marry the literary incarnation of GWB. Toward the end of book, which details their years in the White House, I found Alice's ruminations on fame to be a little tedious. I only need to be told so many times how few people you can really trust and how people think they own you because you are famous. I got it. Otherwise, I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who's willing to accept that people with other political views are just people and not the actual devil.
I am not a big fan of this book. I think I would have liked it a lot better if it had not been loosely based on the life of Laura Bush. I felt like the author put in obnoxious and salacious scenes just to get a reaction. I didn’t appreciate it as I thought I was reading a more serious book.
Sittenfeld does a nice job of not disclosing the parallels of a certain presidency until midway through the book. As it has it's own hearty plot lines and characters about the first decades of the life of the future "First Lady". While there are political references throughout, this is not a book about politics but much more a book about the many relationships throughout one's life from a young girl through adulthood. Sittenfeld does a nice job of showing the development of identities of the main character, Alice, and how they evolve and merge at different times throughout her life. In the final part of this novel, when politics is more central, it is often the subtext of how it affects one's life, personal identity, the shaping of one's ideas and the relationships you have built.

Along with Prep, this is another of Sittenfeld's books I would highly recommend.
I'm also a reviewer that thinks this was based on Laura Bush. It was interesting to possibly know what a first lady's life is like. I did find the book somewhat dragged in places. Would I recommend it to a friend? Only if they were very interested in the Bush family.
For a rather long book, I thought it moved along quickly! Our book club had a great discussion in general and we also enjoyed discussing the Laura Bush connection. We cross researched things to see what was and wasn't true and found it very interesting. It was extremely well written - would definitely recommend it!
great read, based on a few facts from laura bush. i loved the under-stories of the will to stay in a marriage, family dynamics, etc. a little long at times but that was necessary for character development. it's not just a story about a wife supporting her husband but about how she remains a strong individual and I loved that part!
I had no idea this book was in any way associated with Laura Bush at all! After I found that out it made me curious to find out more about the REAL Laura Bush and I appreciated that.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have found in the past that I have read a book from an author, and if I really liked it then read their other books, but the subsequent books don't have the same impact as the first. I loved Prep and really liked Man Of My Dreams. What I didn't expect is that American Wife would end up being my favorite Curtis Sittenfeld read.

The author is truly gifted and her turn of phrase is delightful. I tend to read rather quickly but with her books, I like to slow down and really take in each line. Early in this book the main character described her mother as a "purveyor of sweet simple gestures" and that line just touched me. Gosh, I want to be that. I want my daughter to think of me in that way.

I will buy every book Curtis Sittenfeld writes!
Curtis Sittenfeld’s novel AMERICAN WIFE, written 10 years ago, is loosely based on a former first lady’s story, and couldn’t be more relevant today. The wife of a fun-loving, doesn’t take himself too seriously son of a prominent, wealthy family, becomes the president of the United States. She never in her wildest dreams imagined this to happen, or rather, she was hoping it would never happen. The last place she wanted to be was in the White House. Yet, here she is. Her politics are not her husband’s. But she loves him.

What an edge of your seat story, filled with what would you do situations, achingly life-changing moments, extraordinary family drama, and tightly bound emotions.

This is the book that you want to plow through, but you also want time to stand still because once it ends, you must let go of the characters.
My actual review is somewhere between 3 and 4 stars. Sometimes I really liked this book and I really liked the main character, Alice. Other times, mostly toward the end, I wanted to yell "We got it!

Once a Liar A Novel AF Brady Books

I was eager to read Once a Liar, as I had been very taken by AF Brady’s pre ious book The Blind.
I was not disappointed, Peter Caine the creepy protagonist, is the person we all love to hate.
Brady’s particular talent is a narrative where the accumulation of minute details delineate the character. From the very first scene, at the funeral, Peter’s silent thoughts start us on the journey into his twisted character. This book works like a tapestry, a huge number of colored threads make a picture when we stand back and observe the whole.
I had no emotional allegiance to any of the characters but a silent wish that Sinai, who sounds awfully charming, had a bigger part.
This is an excellent read even to one such as myself who prefers non fiction.
I hope this talented writer will continue to keep me in page turning mode.

Once a Liar A Novel AF Brady Books Reviews

Narrated in first person by sociopath lawyer Peter Caine, Once a Liar by A. F. Brady is an absolutely compelling mystery.

Peter is a cold, calculating man whose every decision is based on how his choices benefit him. A completely remade, successful defense attorney, his marriage to Juliette ended not long after the birth of their only son, Jamie. Seeing little advantage to paying any attention to Jamie, Peter is content to ignore both son and ex-wife until tragedy strikes. After Jamie comes to live with him, Peter is still aloof and indifferent to the teenager and he leaves his live-in girlfriend Claire to parent the young man.

Peter has recently ended his long time, on again/off again relationship with Charlotte “Charlie” Doyle. However, after she is brutally murdered, suspicion falls on Peter. Fearing his simmering feud with District Attorney Harrison Doyle will result in his arrest, Peter and his partner/attorney Sinan Khan try to unearth evidence that will point to Charlie’s killer. Will Peter uncover the perpetrator’s identity before he arrested for Charlie’s murder?

Peter is an incredibly manipulative man who will do anything to succeed. Except for one memorable (and regrettable) time, he is also quite secretive and cagey about his past. At first completely enamored with Juliette, it does not take make for his love to turn to disdain. Although Peter makes no effort to hide his affair with Charlie during his marriage to Juliette, he is much more circumspect with Claire. He has been completely upfront and honest with Claire about what he does and does not want from their relationship. Fully aware that she has put aside her dream of having kids for him, he puts her yearning for motherhood to good use once Jamie comes to live with them. Having finally seen an advantage to being a parent, Peter’s attempts to get to know his son are rather awkward and stilted.

The investigation into Charlie’s murder immediately focuses on Peter. With a former client publicly pointing the finger at him, Peter is desperate to change the narrative in hopes of avoiding arrest. Despite his strenuous claims of innocence, it is impossible for Sinan to completely believe Peter. With the noose slowly tightening, Peter makes one last desperate attempt to clear his name. Will his plan succeed?

Once a Liar is a fiendishly clever and highly entertaining mystery. Peter is easy to hate as he carelessly breaks the hearts of the people who love him. With a series of stunning twists and diabolical turns, A. F. Brady keeps readers in suspense about who murdered Charlie and why until the novel’s shocking conclusion. A devilishly fascinating read that I absolutely loved and highly recommend to readers of the genre.
Sociopaths live among us, and most of the time we don’t know who they are, and this is what ONCE A LIAR is all about. This is not a gory tale of serial killers, of psychopaths, but of people almost, almost like you and me. ONCE A LIAR is an extremely well-crafted story that will keep you guessing until the very end, because I certainly had no idea how it would turn out. The author knows what she’s talking about, she doesn’t fabricate; the writing is clear and smooth; the characters are fascinating, if not the sort of people you wish to know. But then again, we might know someone just like them.

Because it is written in such a deceptive and matter-of-fact way, I feared that ONCE A LIAR might end sloppily, but seldom have I been caught so unawares. Told in the first person, from our very unreliable narrator Peter Caine, the narrative alternates between Now and Then. Don’t blink, don’t skip a chapter, don’t think that something doesn’t matter, because it will eventually. “Good things come to those who wait” has never been truer! Who needs boring old serial killers when sociopaths are so much more interesting! ONCE A LIAR was the book I was hoping to read, and it delivered mightily! Enjoy!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Peter Caine is not a nice man. You may even call him a sociopath which is perfect, really, for his job as a Manhattan defense attorney. He doesn't lose a wink of sleep when he acquits murderers, rapists, and pedophiles. Success, wealth, and recognition are the only things that Peter cares about.

Peter has an ex-wife, Juliette, a teenage son, Jamie, a current live in girlfriend, Claire, and a secret lover, Charlotte.

What happens when, Charlotte, Peter's longtime on-again off again lover, the reason his first marriage dissolved, and the reason his current girlfriend has given him the ultimatum, it's me or it's her, is violently murdered?

When you've amassed so many enemies it's not surprising that eventually someone would have an ax to grind. For Peter that time has come!

This is one of those books that I enjoyed thoroughly but it wasn't exactly a page turner. A slow burn that I savored. I thought that Peter was portrayed as a perfectly despicable character that I truly loved to hate. I adored Claire and felt so sorry for Juliette and Jamie. The ending was just perfect! A.F. Brady is a talented writer that I plan to keep my eye on. 4 stars!

Thank you to NetGalley & Harlequin Trade Publishing for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Excellent book, brilliant read. I looked forward to Brady’s second book and it didn’t disappoint.

The Fairest of Them All A Novel Carolyn Turgeon 9781451683783 Books

The Fairest of them All takes the reader into the realm of psychological reality. It is a deep realm and you take the dive with her. (I should be saying this for her other powerful novel Mermaid! LOL) Turgeon has the ability to take much beloved and ancient arch-types, like Rapunzel and Snow White, and creatively turn the tales on their heads, resulting in a remarkably new story that speaks of inner truths and the darker nature of humanity. This makes the novel modern, relevant and once again timeless. It is a credit to her writing and her out-of the-box thinking. The writing is beautiful and that beauty makes this story both up-lifting and disturbing at the same time; a powerful mix. This is a tale for grown-ups. Don't be deceived by the concept of a fairy tale. Fairy tales were never really meant to be "light" reading. And this is a brand new one for here and now.

The Fairest of Them All A Novel Carolyn Turgeon 9781451683783 Books Reviews

Spellbinding novel about how and why, exactly, wicked queens become wicked. In concept, a mashup of Rapunzel and Snow White, but so fully developed it feels like its own fairy tale, especially considering Turgeon's choice to make Rapunzel a powerful enchantress in her own right, before she ever even lets down her hair. It's a pleasure to watch Rapunzel's slow descent into evil, and Turgeon's ability to fully inhabit every moment of this novel--to make it sing with life and sensuality--is breathtaking. Fans of Gregory Maguire's WICKED and Marion Zimmer Bradley's THE MISTS OF AVALON, take note this one's for you!
Love this author. The Mermaid was the first book I read. This is a combination of Rapunzel andSnow White and ties the two tales together plausibly. A great read.
Interesting blending of two classic fairy tales. One of them is one of my favorites, thus I was curious to see how the author treated the charactors. She stayed pretty true to the plots of the stories. There were a few things I didn't like near the end of the story, but all in all I enjoyed reading it and would share it with other adult friends who enjoyed fantasy stories.
I was absolutely shocked by this book. It wasn't what I expected at all, but I loved it! The novel ties the stories of Rapunzel and Snow White together in one thrilling, seductive tale. I was totally absorbed and emotionally attached to the characters throughout the story. It's very sexual, and some of the violent parts are slightly graphic, but Carolyn Turgeon blew me away.
This is the story of Rapunzel who is the possessor of the magic mirror ("Mirror, Mirror etc"). She lives in the forest with her adopted mother who sells the usual herbal remedies and potions to love lorn women etc. and is called a 'witch'. Rapunzel wants to go to the fair held in the village near the castle but her mother locks her into the tower to protect her. Unfortunately, when her mother has gone to nurse someone, the handsome prince happens by, and the expected happens - he climbs Rapunzel's hair up to her tower and they become lovers. Sounds like the same old story, right? But not in Carolyn Turgeon's hands. She has the most luminous language, every description sings on the page. I read some bits several times because they sounded so delightful and perfect. She has her very own twist on the Anderson fairy tale and I loved every word.
Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your...jealousy? Carolyn Turgeon has done it again in this powerful retelling of one of the fairy tale-world's most intriguing characters. Blending the tales of the famous golden-haired princess with that of the beautiful Snow White, Turgeon works her magic in a novel that is as inventive as it is intriguing. Turgeon breathes life--and magic--into the strands of Rapunzel's famous locks by giving the character depth and dimension, as well as an intoxicatingly real dark side that changes the course of Rapunzel's life. Leave it to the woman behind 'Mermaid' to depict Rapunzel as the Vain Queen! A word to the wise this book is not for younger readers. Mature themes abound in the forests of 'The Fairest of Them All'--especially the unexpected end--so keep that in mind before reading. Otherwise, you'll want to climb this tower--just don't expect to come down.
I liked the premise of this book; the melding of Rupunzel and Snow White. I feel like portions of the book moved quicker than others and I felt tired of reading once Rupunzel got to the castle and had to deal with everyone saying she was a witch etc. I felt she kind of became a boring character at that point and I really had to push myself to keep reading. I’m glad I did though because I liked the ending and how she was able to turn everything around and put the kingdom before her jealous needs and wants. Although that incest thing was surprising, I didn’t see that coming. Overall I liked it but the middle portion lagged for me

Here We Are Feminism for the Real World Kelly Jensen Books

Book Riot editor and Stacked writer Kelly Jensen has pulled together a collection of essays representing the many and diverse facets of feminism, creating an intersectional introduction to the movement. Interspersed with the longer essays are short, fun pieces, such as feminist music playlists, a list of “Ten Amazing Scientists (Who Also Happen to Be Women)”, as well as songs, poetry, and a list of the best girl friendships in fiction. While straight-up essays are the most common type of piece, Wendy Xu’s entry “The Princess and the Witch” is in the form of a comic, and there are several interviews as well. Most of the contributions are original, though some such as Roxane Gay’s “Bad Feminism: Take Two” and Amandla Stenberg’s “Don’t Cash Crop My Corn Rows” are either reproductions or adaptations of previously published material. There were only a few things I thought were notably absent, such as a piece about affirmative consent to complement the discussion of rape culture. The chapter on romance and sexuality could also have used an essay about asexuality and aromanticism. Overall, however, I was pleased with the diversity of this introduction to feminism, and would heartily recommend it.

Here We Are Feminism for the Real World Kelly Jensen Books Reviews

Inspirational. Educational. Intersectional. Both serious and fun in all the right spots.

The book is rather obviously written for a teenage audience but I found it to be a useful read even as a woman in my late twenties. The essays by various activists, writers, and artists are really excellent and uplifting and empowering.
I would have killed for this book when I was 14. Now I am recommending it to every woman I know who has a teenage daughter. Every single essay in this collection is excellent. The voices are diverse, and even I am learning from them. Highly, highly recommended to anyone who wonders about modern feminism.
A wonderful collection of personal stories, illustrations, and playlists by feminists and for everyone. Accessible, touching, and informative. Should be on everyone's bookshelf!
This is an essential read for any teen reader wanting to know more about feminism or wanting to explore different views of feminism. The scrapbook format does well to highlight the mix of formats, from essays to comics to artwork to lists to informational sections that define words we hear when we talk about feminism. The mix of formats and of voices will keep readers engaged - there's something for everyone here. I was very impressed with the diversity of voices (along the lines of race, ethnicity, ability, religion, sexual orientation, etc.) that are collected here.

There's a lot of talk about feminism going on right now, with people marching in support of women's rights and the many issues that we're discussing in this country. Hand this collection to young adult readers to introduce them to feminism or expand on what they already know and think.
still reading since it has thoughtful essays that deserve thoughtful consideration. I purchased a copy for my daughter since we come from such a different perspective. I had a boss tell me he would pay a man more for the same work. She's not had to face that. This book reminds me of how far we have come and how far we still need to go since now it is not overt discrimination.
This book is such a necessary read. I saw myself in some of the essays and learned new things about feminism that I hadn't considered. I think the editor Kelly Jensen did a great job gathering all these different types of entries into a well crafted and cohesive handbook on feminism. It is a very welcoming and thoughtful exploration of feminism. I highly recommend the physical book because if you're anything like me, you'll be highlighting/bookmarking things to come back to later.
I can't wait to share this with friends and pass it around! It's also going in my "for when you're older" shelf for nieces and goddaughters because it is an essential read for any person moving through the world in a perceived-as-female body. BUT, I'm also going to make sure any nephews and godsons read it, too, because feminism is for everyone.

Taming the Storm The Storm Series eBook Samantha Towle Reviews

Boy meets a girl, hits on her twice and is shocked to hell to find she wants nothing to do with him. Boy meets up with girl months later on a business trip. Girl puts up road blocks. Boy decides he likes the chase, the challenge and uses his charms to move those road blocks. Girl and boy decide the sexual tension is too much and once they give in, they realize sex is great. They decide they can do this "f**k buddies thing" while on business, once the trip is over, they will resume their old lives and pretend it never happened. Problem is, we aren't talking about any ordinary boy or any ordinary girl. We are talking about Tom Effing Carter, bassist for The Mighty Storm, and the hot and sexy lead singer of Vintage, Lyla Summers, nor are we talking about any ordinary business trip...this is a 6 week tour - on a tour bus!

"You're such a guy."
"I f***ing hope so, Firecracker. With the size of my junk, I'd worry if I wasn't."

I have loved this series and I can't think of a better way to end it than with a story about the untamable Tom Carter and the one who tamed him, Lyla Summers! This book was fun and it was sexy, all the things you would expect from a story about Tom. The banter between the two is off the charts good. Lyla gives as good as she gets and she is exactly what Tom needs.

"What will you do if you run out of women?"
"That'll never happen."
"You go through women at the speed of light." "So, what will you do then? Start recycling?"
Nope. I'm not an environmentally friendly kind of guy. And just so you know, I might have gone through a lot of women in my time, but when I f**k - I f**k long and slow...real f***ing slow."
"And I need to know your screwing speed, why?"
"You're not ready to hear the answer to that question."
"And what if I ever am-" "I mean, if I am, at some point in the imaginary, not-real-ever future?"
"Well, on that imaginary day, you would let me know, and then I'd tell you. But until the, just use that imagination of yours."

What I didn't expect, was that it was also a little sad, and that dimension made me love this book even more.

"You deserve better," "You deserve better than me."

Tom has a boyish charm that is as equally endearing as his sexy alpha male tendencies. And, despite him being funny as hell, he is hiding pain. It is that pain that we learn is the cause for him being the philandering Tom Cat that he is.

As he struggles to overcome his pain, Lyla struggles to overcome hers and the two find that they just might be perfect for each other. That is if they can let go of the past.

"Your guy is out there. One who won't be a mut. There's a guy who deserves an awesome girl like you."
I didn't like the characters in this book very much, but the book itself was very readable, I wasn't bored or wanting to skim parts.

Just once, when I'm reading one of these books, when the guy treats the girl like absolute crap, I want her to walk away and not look back. Of course that never happens, but I keep hoping!

When we finally get some insight into Tom, the book is nearly over, and I've spend the first 90% disliking him. Even with his tragic past, it doesn't excuse the awful way he treats women, especially Lyla. And the scene where he's out of condoms and Lyla balks at going without is gross. I completely get why she was hesitant, he's a complete manwhore (or "mut" as Lyla puts it). So instead of waiting (or going to the drugstore), he pins her to the bed until she relents? I thought that sort of "forced seduction" crap went out with disco and polyester leisure suits. Yuck.

Lyla seemed to be a strong woman except when it came to Tom, then she turns into a simpering idiot. I was hoping to get more story about her father, that seemed like an interesting storyline, but nothing happened with it.

There is a bit of Jake and Tru in the end, and it was nice seeing them again.
I was really happy to see that the next book in the series was going to be about Tom. I have to say that the picture I had in my mind of him physically wasn't anything like he was described in this book. I was happy to change my imagination to a sexier, muscular man than the other that I had imagined before.

I was hoping throughout that we would learn more about Tom and why he was/is the way he was/is. What his back story was. What his family life was like. I had to wait longer than I thought I'd have to but was thrilled to finally have the curtain pulled back and got a glance around.

It was telling for me when Tom went into the chapel at the hospital when Tru was in the accident. That's the first real glance you get at who the man behind the mask really is.

I have to say that I was also surprised and intrigued when Jake put Tom in charge of Lyla's band. Band manager. He was the last person I would have thought.

LOVE LYLA!! LOVE HER! I love me a strong leading lady. She doesn't disappoint. Loved the relationship that she and Tom built and loved how it all began. Loved the push and pull between them throughout. Definitely felt like slapping them both upside the head a few times.

Great book. Highly recommend.
Man. I was excited for this book, because Samantha Towle is the bomb, but even I was surprised at how much this story reached in and yanked my heart right up my throat. Lyla is SO kick ass, I laughed out loud so many times at her internal dialogue. And while I loved Tom in the previous two TMS books, he just gutted me in this one. Yes, a couple time I wanted to knee him in the balls, but that's what makes Ms Towle such a good author. I still adored him despite all of that. The sexual tension between these two was incredible, but she made the wait so worth it once these finally hit the sheets. What I also loved was that she didn't put too much angst in this book, which happens far too often in my opinion. It was just enough to make me unable to stop reading, but not to the point where I'm ready to drive over my kindle bc of what the characters are doing. This is one freaking talented author. Go ahead and fall in love with Tom and Lyla.
Tough but sweet heroine. Check. Hot, Alpha, Naughty Bad Ass Rocker. Check. So hot I think he might be hotter than Jake Wethers. Guiltily, Check. I am damn loyal to Jake BUT....Tom was a lovable smart ass, and seeing him open up to love and life with Lyla was an amazing journey. And, I totally appreciated his dominant side.

Last Stand of Dead Men Skulduggery Pleasant Derek Landy 9780007489206 Books

For some reason, this is probably the hardest book for me to review, ever.

For starters: I should probably mention that it's hard for me to be completely unbiased. I am after all a character in this book - or rather there is a minor character in this book named after me (I'm not going to go as far as to say "inspired by me", even though she's sensible and reasonable and what not, ahem), amongst all the other dozen or so fan cameos who made it into this book, so... yeah.

Other than that (i.e. being a total fangirl of this series and of its author and posting and interacting with other fans online), I have no affiliation with either the author or the publisher. I have received no free copies in exchange for this five star review - in fact, I've already purchased three copies myself (Kindle to read + hardback & paperback to adorn my shelves) and, I suspect, will be buying some more.

Now that this is out of the way... I don't want to spoil things too much, so I won't be going into plot detail, but be warned that there will be reactions here - and spoilers to the extent that have been hinted at in the description or other material (blog posts, Twitter posts) that was publicly available before the book was released.

Of course, if you've read this far into this series - and have taken a look at the cover, with that cover art and the "No one is safe" tag line, it probably goes without saying that Things Happen in this book, and that not all of those things are fun, light-hearted and fluffy.

Overall impression: this is, without a doubt, in my opinion, the best Skulduggery Pleasant book written yet. By that I mean the plot, the twists, the writing, the sheer complexity of this eighth - and penultimate - full volume.

Is it my *favourite* book in the series? No. No, it's not. Mostly because of reasons - reasons that have to do with Last Stand of Dead Men leaving me heartbroken and crushed and numb once I was done.

"Children's book", they say. "Humour," they say. ... No. Yes, children can read it (if they're okay with all the bloodshed and the sexual innuendo, which by now isn't always even innuendo but pretty straightforward relationship stuff, or the swearing, which is, while not overwhelming, present and IMHO very much justified when there), and yes, like every other SP book, it contains a lot of humour and howlingly funny moments and scenes and dialogue, but this is neither a children's book or a predominantly humorous book.

This is a book about war, and about betrayal, and about the things people do. The things *good* people do, when there is a need, and the things good people do, when they cannot resist the temptations and the lure of absolute power and freedom and magic any longer. It's a book about how far we - or the characters, anyway - are willing to go, and a book about the breaking points of strong people.

There is torture, and there is death, and there is bloodshed, and there is backstabbing, and there are political machinations, and yes, there is also love (because no matter how one interprets the love between Valkyrie and Skulduggery, whether one reads it as completely platonic or something a bit different, I can't see how one could deny it's there in so many ways, but Val & Skul, central to the book and the series as it is, is not the only relationship touched upon), and there is heartbreak and hurt and sadness.

I would love to talk about characters here, but that would take me straight into spoiler territory. Suffice it to say that Valkyrie's path - the path she has been on since the first book, the first day, but more pronouncedly since the end of Dark Days - has taken another turn, sharper than ever. And I have no idea - no idea at all! - how things will turn out in book nine, the final book. My heart is hoping for a happy ending; my head is saying it's not going to happen.

Skulduggery... Let's be honest, I've been in love with Skulduggery since his first appearance. Since I saw the cover of the first book, probably. But this book, this book made me fall in love with him all over again. He's magnificent when in charge, he's loveable even when jealous, he's sweet and adorable when smug... and truly, I think this was finally his book, one where we see him through the eyes of multiple people, not just Valkyrie.

And oh, how my heart aches for him.

If this is Skulduggery's book, it's also the book of a multitude of secondary characters. We get more points of view than ever before, more chapters from secondary characters' POV, and while I wished deep down that we'd focused more on Skul and Val instead, I do think the multiple points of view enriched the book, emphasized the sheer scope of it (as well as providing some much needed laughs at times, even if Scapegrace and Thrasher have become much more than just comic relief by now).

And then there were the twists and the reveals. One of them I had guessed, sort of - I was about 98% certain of the identity of a particular character, who until this book was only seen pulling strings behind the scenes, mostly by the process of elimination (or in other words, no matter how much I tried to assume otherwise, every hint, every path of reasoning kept leading me back to this one specific person). So when that reveal happened, I wasn't surprised by the who, but I was still shocked about the how.

Another of the Things That Happened... I had not expected. I hadn't expected it to happen in this book, in any case, or in this way. And that one hurt, even more than the first twist, and it's the primary reason why, for the first time in all these years I've been reading this series, I'm not anticipating the next (and final) book with excitement but rather dreading it.

That said, bring it on. I'm scared - terrified, in fact, and right now I'm nowhere near ready yet, emotionally, to face that final chapter in what has become my absolute favourite book series ever - but I trust Derek Landy and most importantly, I trust him to do what is needed, not what the readers might want, no matter how much it might hurt. (That said, I'd be delighted if "what is needed" turns out to be a happy ending, with Skul & Val walking hand in hand into the sunset. Oh yes.)

Last Stand of Dead Men Skulduggery Pleasant Derek Landy 9780007489206 Books Reviews

Every one of his stories in this series has been excellent. Well written and enjoyable for both my 10 year old and myself to read.
This book was one of the best books of the series (next to mortal coil) it was just amazing how Derek had changed the idea of one bad guy to destroy the world to an entire war of the sanctuaries. I think Derek knows that his readers are more mature and so he changed the whole idea of having friends and trusting because as you get to see more lies betrayal and distrust among people we thought were friends turn to be enemy's. All in all I say this book is one of the best funniest and well written books of the series and I recommend this book to anybody into action whether you like reading or not you want to read this book!
I am still floored by how fast this book arrived! In just over a week when I didn't expect it for another week or two!!

Still reading but, as always, Derek Landy is just a pure, literary genius which I know this will inflate his ego even more if I'm fortunate enough that he reads this. If you are reading this Derek, you are the epitome of awesome!
Been following since the very start and was never really sure how the next book could be better than the last. Kingdom of the Wicked was a lapse. For me, this book needed to be good for the child in me. That little kid was disappointed with the 7th book. This time I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Apparently the little kid in me enjoys war and nuclear deterrents, and I'm ok with that. The level of wit in this is incredible, the dialogue is quicker than the action, it's to be admired.
And the surprises, I kept guessing the next move and figuring yes that will happen, there is no way the event in my mind would not happen on the paper. I got it right once, and even then I was still pretty wrong. The wait for the next one begins now.
If you liked Harry Potter... and even if you didn't...Skullduggery is not just for children. Derek Landy is a force to be reckoned with. Characters that are fleshed out (even old Skullduggery) a story that is involving, a universe that is compelling. An urban fantasy that crosses audience boundaries and is destined for greatness. This is one of those series that I would love to see as a film in the style of Harry Potter. So long as it was made with the same quality and respect.
She absolutely adores this book series and thus for her birthday I got her the this missing book. The art cover for all the books are very nice to look at. Little Sis even gave me a spoiler summary on the whole story line. I will start to read it myself when she lets me even near the books. Must have been great because she read the book in one day =]
The penultimate Skulduggery! What I've always liked about this series is that Landy doesn't shy away from real experiences. He joins George RR Martin and Joss Whedon in their love of killing off beloved characters.

But that's not what I'm talking about here. The losses for the characters, on a personal and world-wide scale, are definite and gut wrenching. All of the main characters are deeply realised with goals and desires, some of which compete with their stated aims.

It's a standout in young adult fiction. Full of humour and action and magic.

In Last Stand, all of this is here, but ramped up by a factor of ten. The losses are greater, the stakes are massive and the end is nigh. I'll be sorry to see it end, but I'm sure I'll enjoy the ending,
For some reason, this is probably the hardest book for me to review, ever.

For starters I should probably mention that it's hard for me to be completely unbiased. Oh my God. I completely loved this book! It was all about Damon and Elena, and that's what I loved about it. It shows a softer, more vulnerable side to Damon he only shows around her, and she begins to realize that maybe Stefan isn't her only world. The Dark Dimension story plot with the kitsune keys was fascinating.

What I do have to complain about is everything that's happening in Fell's Church. The book is mainly about Damon and Elena getting Stefan back from Shi no Shi, right? So why add the random story plot about what's happening back in their small town? And the thing with Caroline turning into a werewolf and having puppies or whatever was really unneeded. Not too many people care about that character enough to see her in the book.

And I also hate the ending of the book. I felt it was a little rushed. It's like I barely knew what was going on. I didn't feel it was necessary to have that in the book, she could have waited until the last book to put that story plot in and explained it a little better, because it seemed to move way too fast and with little notice.

But otherwise, completely great novel. My favorite so far!

On the run . . .

Elena Gilbert's love, the vampire Stefan Salvatore, has been captured and imprisoned by demonic spirits who are wreaking havoc in Fell's Church. While her friends Bonnie and Meredith explore the evil that has taken over their town, Elena goes in search of Stefan.

In order to find him, she entrusts her life to Stefan's brother, Damon Salvatore, the handsome but deadly vampire who wants Elena, body and soul. Along with her childhood friend Matt, they set out for the slums of the Dark Dimension, where Stefan is being held captive. It is rumored to be a world where vampires and demons roam free, but humans must live enslaved to their supernatural masters. . . .

Elena will stop at nothing to free Stefan. Yet with each passing day the tension between Elena and Damon grows, and she is faced with a terrible decision: Which brother does she really want?

Back in Fell's Church, Bonnie and Meredith have made some dire discoveries.
The Vampire Diaries The Return Midnight L J Smith Books Reviews

This review will have SPOILERS for ALL the Vampire Diaries books.
*
*
*
*
*
*
I finally chugged to the end of Midnight yesterday, and I'm just appalled. The biggest pet peeve I have in fantasy/sci fi stories is when something happens at the end to undo everything that was done up to that point...and that's exactly what happens here. Not only is the entire Return series pretty much wiped out (although not from my memory, more's the pity), but also most of everything after "The Awakening," so the original series is undone as well. Unbelievable. HOW MUCH DAMAGE CAN SOMEONE DO TO HER OWN WORK????

As an aside, there's a stupid new plotline for Meredith which reeks of setting up for more squeezing of the cash cow. Yes, I know L.J. has been fired, but someone's going to continue making money off these books...even if they had to make over a beloved old character to do it. We're supposed to believe, NOW, that Meredith is really a "hunter/slayer?" That she has a vampire twin? That she herself is part vampire who must eat a teaspoon of blood with every meal??? I call SHENANIGANS!!!!

Then, finally, there's the whole Damon aspect to this book. Damon starts off as human, but instead of doing something, ANYTHING, with this plot thread, he quickly arranges to become a vampire again. Then, he's killed, but not killed, at the end. Who cares? If he's not dead, why did we have to read his extended death scene? UGH.

And after all this aggravation, I have to say that I will check out the first Hunters book from the library, just to see if the ghostwriter will try to mimic the old books (in which case, kudos) or this new trash...at which point I'll check out permanently.

And WHERE IS STRANGE FATE??? Oh yeah, I forgot, they don't have a Night World TV series so it isn't necessary. I guarantee we will see some new Secret Circle book, riding the wave when THAT series comes out, before we ever see the book we old-time fans have been waiting for 11 years (and counting).

I am so sorry I ever picked up Nightfall to support L.J.'s return.

ADDENDUM I also just saw on L.J.'s website under "booklist" this message on the cover image "The face on the front is Audrey, who finally gets her just desserts..." Um, there IS no Audrey in this book or series. Audrey is a character in the Forbidden Game series, and NOT one who should get "just desserts." Did she mean Caroline? Way to know your own characters!

The Romeo And Juliet Code Phoebe Stone 9780545215114 Books

I bought this book for my 10 year old granddaughter, but read it first because I was concerned that the cover might indicate a book about a boy/girl relationship she might be too young for. Surprise! This is not that kind of book! Instead, it is the most delightful story set in WWII with winsome characters, humor, mystery, setting (the coast of Maine), and tidbits of war history both in Europe and in the States that I did not know about before. The plot is a delicious page-turner with touches of intrigue that make the reader anxious to read the next book and find out the rest of the story. Loving it so much, I passed it along not only to my granddaughter, but to my grown daughters, three more adult friends who love sweet stories with British overtones, and then ordered a set for another very special pre-teen. There IS a boy/girl friendship, but it is most innocent and heartwarming. LOVED these books!!!!

The Romeo And Juliet Code Phoebe Stone 9780545215114 Books Reviews

This was one of the best books I ever read. It was sad, fun, romantic, and it took courage. I would have not be able to handle what she went threw !!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;-)
The Romeo and Juliet Code by Phoebe Stone is a poignant, well-plotted, character-driven novel that will appeal to a wide audience. Felicity is the intelligent and wise-beyond-her years heroine, who has been transported from war time England to the safe haven of Maine, USA. In a large home in a remote location it begins to feel as if every room harbors one quirky, irascible and fascinating character after another. Tied in with Felicity's attempts to overcome her loneliness and adjust to a dramatically different place and family there emerges an over-riding plot that involves secret communications between the allies in their war against the Nazis. This is an altogether splendid novel that packs as much character, plot and background into its 300 pages as anyone could possibly imagine. Presumably aimed at a young adult audience, like The Secret Garden, The Romeo and Juliet Code soars beyond mere demographic restraints. Highly recommended for readers of ALL ages.
Burgess Needle
Retired School Librarian
It was ok. Don't get me wrong it was a good book and very believable. But what happens between her and Derek?
Read this a few years ago and loved it so i got this and the sequel for myself
Interesting
Historical WWII fiction for kids. My 6th grader heard about this at girl scout camp and it was perfect level and material for her. This is book 1 of the series.
My 10 year old daughter loved this novel! While she is a strong reader, she had not yet developed a "passion" for reading. While reading this story, she continually told me, "Mom, you need to read this!" As a mom and elementary educator, I am thrilled that she now realizes that reading can be pleasurable and relaxing, not just another assignment for school. I also loved that this story created spontaneous research of WWII, a subject she won't study for at least another year in school. Thank you, Phoebe Stone, for helping promote a lifelong love of reading in my daughter and helping her experience her first "addictive" read!

Infinity Chronicles of Nick Sherrilyn Kenyon Books

As a die-hard DH fan, I had SERIOUS trepidation about this book. I have to say the last few books that followed after Acheron up to now were painful reads. Painful and frustrating. So, when Kenyon decided to jump on the Twilight bandwagon with teen paranormal fiction/romance, I'd pretty much thrown in the towel. I honestly didn't think we could get a good story without hot Dark Hunters traversing the streets of Anytown, USA and I was furious with Kenyon for MONTHS over what I was sure was going to be a literary debacle.

Okay, I was wrong and I take it all back.

Firstly, for those of you moaning about "eww, it's YA", read the dang cover! Sherri has said for MONTHS this was teen fiction, so man up and deal with it. Blame yourself for not keeping up with the DH Universe.

Secondly, the book was flipping awesome. It was PURE Sherri from cover to cover. It has everyone in the DH Universe we all know and love plus some really new and interesting characters, too. THIS is what teen fiction should be, a nonstop roller-coaster ride with unexpected curves, dips and twists that keeps you turning pages. Though it's toned down for the teen audience, don't think that Sherri compromised on wit, humor, or action. It's all there. It's the old Sherri we know from before Acheron. (Not sure what happened to the books after that, but I'll forgive her anything because Infinity flippin' rocks!)

Thirdly, the CD set is narrated by Holter Graham. HOW MUCH BETTER CAN IT GET? I haven't been this happy over a DH book SINCE Acheron. Finally, some teen fiction that has soul, character development, humor. It doesn't take itself seriously like Twilight (die already!) or Vampire Academy. Infinity blows them ALL out of the water and I feel the DH fever again.

You proved me wrong, Sherri. I'm sorry I lost faith in you, but you came through, babe. You nailed it with Infinity!

Infinity Chronicles of Nick Sherrilyn Kenyon Books Reviews

OMG, this was so good, even better than I've been expecting. I'm a huge fan of the Dark-Hunter books and when I found out she was writing a book just about Nick, I couldn't wait to read it. Of course, I had to as I had so many other books on my to-read list that by the time I got around to reading the first book, she'd come out with another five. But you know what, it was worth the wait because now I can read the whole series at once. Reading about how Nick becomes the Malachi is awesome because I get to see his interactions with Acheron and Kyrian and how he got to where we meet him I future books, I just love reading his first impressions of everyone and I really want to know what Nekoda's role is in his life because she seems to be a central character to the story. I'm looking forward to reading the next chapter of Nick's journey.
I always re-read series that I find very interesting - intelligent writing that is reasonable. Well, as reasonable as you can get in a book about a teenager coming to grips with a world filled with immortal warriors, demons, weres, zombies, and just one "traditional" vampire to add a little spice.

I just finished listening the audio version in preparation for the new book coming out later this year. It's amazing how much funnier the dialog is out loud that it was when I read the book a few months back. And how many more inside jokes made sense. Sure, the re-read means that some of the mystery is gone -- I mostly know what everyone is -- but the humor more than makes up for it.

My 12 year old looked at the book and decided that she wasn't interested. Listening to it in the car with me this week just might have changed her mind.
Ahahaha! Once again, my semi-functional intuition has come through for me!

Yes, that's right. I loved this book. I just want to smother it with praise. I have never been so happy with a random book I've chosen off a shelf.

Alright, alright, I'm done fangirling. On to the actual review.

Nick Gautier is an average fourteen year old kid. Sort of. If you take away the fact that recently cannibal attacks have erupted at his school, zombies are suddenly roaming the streets by the dozen, and his best friends are chainsaw-wielding monster slayers with a few screws loose.

Totally normal.

Even more normal when he discovers that more than half the football team are shape shifters. And the class nerd ends up turning them into the living undead.

And so, with a few demons, armed lunatics, hotrod goth chicks, and a mysterious man who looks suspiciously like Nick, they must stop the zombie apocalypse at its source. Which is sort of hard to do, when that "source" may or may not be Nick himself.

THIS.

This book is full of so much win that I'm surprised it didn't explode from the sheer epicness. Seriously. I want to personally wrap this book in gold cloth and give it to everyone on the planet. Just read it.

Nick Gautier is absolutely my favorite literary protagonist ever. His sarcasm is beyond belief, along with his comebacks and jokes. He took everything in stride, and managed to be totally clueless without losing his dignity. Hell, he was just awesome. I think 65% of my love for this book was because of him.

What's even better? He sounded like a boy. Now, not to sound sexist or anything, but women authors ninety percent of the time suck at writing from a boy's perspective. Either they make the boy too flowery and romantic, or they make him stupid as chiz. Generally a combination of the two. But Nick? Nick sounded like what I imagine it would be like to be inside a really awesome boy's head. I didn't realize the author was a girl until I was halfway through the book, and I was surprised.

That's good writing right there. When the readers are shocked at the differences between you and your characters? Yah.

Also on this bloody adventure were Bubba and Mark, two of the most insane shop keepers I have ever known. Anyone who keeps a flame thrower, rocket launcher, a hundred different guns, and an ax behind their counter has to be just a little off their rocker. Or paranoid. Bubba and Mark are both, but for good reasons. Because they are the only two people in town who are fully prepared and equipped when the zombies descended.

Be-cause-they-are awesome.

Simi, though, had to be my favorite in this story, besides Nick. The Simi was a Goth Lolita character, which I always love, and she was epic. She taught me that even zombies can taste good with barbecue sauce. And that it's actually possible to make grammatically incorrect sentences sound cute. (I never thought it was possible)

Caleb was questionable, but he won my heart in the end just like the rest. I have no idea what his true motives are, but he seems like a good guy. I think.

Anyways, those are the main characters. There's also a few other ones, but they're not as important and not nearly as fun to write about. On to the plot.

There was not a single point in the story at which I was bored. It was never slow paced, and even when something wasn't going on, Nick's sarcastic narration made it worth reading. Also, the action was well described, so I was able to picture it in my head, rather than just re create the scene mentally using my own understandable words.

Also, there were tons of references that are fun to pick up on. It gave me a really giddy feeling everytime I understood the characters' allusions. (and if you don't get it, the context clues make it easy to know what they're talking about). There were references to video games, movies, anime, cultural terms. It added to the whole "he actually sounded like a teenage boy" thing because, let's face it You cannot sound like a realistic teenager without alluding to lots of things. We make inside jokes, we quote things, and we listen to a lot of music and shows. It happens.

And yet the author was able to do so without sounding obnoxious. Rather than advertising things, she made it sound like it really casually came up. As if she hadn't even meant to include it. It was nice, listening to him talk about specific things without feeling like people were trying to sell me stuff.

The best part about this book, though, aside from the characters and writing---the climax. Oh my god, it was epic. With zombies and mind control and demons and flame throwers, it was by far the most fantabulous book climax I'd ever read in my entire life, next to Divergent and Unwind. I was on the edge of my seat clapping like an idiot with my eyes glued to the page. I don't think a book has ever gotten that reaction out of me (besides the ones I listed.) It was extraordinary.

Cold Kiss Amy Garvey Books

I got Cold Kiss last year as an Amazon freebie. I'd heard great things about it and the sequel was coming out so I thought I'd give it a shot. The only thing I really knew about the plot at the time was that it involved a girl raising her boyfriend from the dead. I expected it to be a fun, if sort of cheesy, read. Unfortunately I found that instead of fun, it was kind of gross and more than a little disturbing. That's all fine and good if that's what the author is going for, but I feel like this one just missed the mark.

LIKES:

Exploding squirrels, geriatric cats and other things that make me giggle: There were some things in the story that gave it personality and humor. Wren has magical powers that she doesn't know how to control and this can cause some major outbursts when she gets freaked out. This includes the downfall of a particularly unlucky squirrel who happens to be in the line of fire. This sort of dark humor mixed with real-life everyday problems like a pet cat who seems to suffer from feline dementia could have been used to really give the story some much-needed levity. Unfortunately these were few and far between and it just wasn't enough to take my mind off of the ick-factor of the book.
There is some heart to the story: even though this wasn't my favorite story, there were times where I was drawn into Wren and Danny's plight. There were some scenes that were very emotional and really touched on grief, loss and sacrifice.

DISLIKES:

Gross: By this point in my reading life, I've read and loved plenty of love stories about the undead. Of course usually they are vampires or at least they don't look like/smell like zombies. This allows me to ignore the fact that our hero should be rotting away in a box somewhere. Unfortunately there were too many scenes where Wren and Danny were kissing and Wren kept talking about how cold he was and how he smelled like dirt and dead leaves (or, you know, a graveyard). In the meantime, Danny keeps wanting to go farther and farther and I couldn't help but be grossed out.
Gabriel or The Guy With The Worst Timing Ever: seriously dude, this girl's dead boyfriend is living in the garage and you're going in for the kiss? So, not the time. I just do not understand why we needed an undead love triangle. It didn't add much to the story and frankly I would be pissed if some guy kept hitting on me after he found out about my zombie slave boyfriend. Timing is everything guys.
I just didn't care about the characters: They all seemed pretty foolish to me. Wren and Gabriel for the reasons mentioned above and Danny because, well, he's dead. He only ever thinks about Wren and is either lost without her or physically attacking the guy who's trying to be her new boyfriend (which to be fair is pretty understandable).
Overall, I just didn't care for this one. It wasn't terrible, but it just wasn't for me. The writing style is nice and the concept had some promise, but I don't think I'll be checking out the next one.

Cold Kiss Amy Garvey Books Reviews

Full review on Reader's Dialogue [...]

Danny and Wren's love is shown mostly through flashbacks and memories, and some of Wren's ruminations. But even though the current situation is far from what their love truly is, I felt like I really got what their relationship was like, and it totally made sense for Wren to want it back, to feel like if she didn't have it she couldn't go on living. It's the kind of love that insinuates itself into every part of your life, breathing new life and vitality into everything. Can you blame Wren then?

And then there's Gabriel - very different from Danny, but just as good for Wren. Gabriel's mysteriousness at the beginning of the book colors the way I see him even though he's pretty much an open book for most of the story. The way he's described is totally gorgeous, so even without the physical descriptions, I would have been imaging a tall, slim guy. Though I would have had him with dark hair. The constant mention of his gray eyes is striking, and adds to the creepiness and thrill of how he can see more than the regular person.

Wren's growing catastrophe builds and builds really credibly throughout the book, and her emotions and responses escalate with the mounting tension. There never really is a big moment, since everything with Danny happens gradually. There is, of course, the way she tries to put things right at the end of the book, but even that felt sort of anticlimactic to me. Though I'm guessing the reason it's so abrupt is that it continues with whole new twists in Glass Heart.

And I'll find out soon enough, because the characters and tone of the book make me crave more of this story!
This isn't an action-packed, paranormal, good guy-bad guy book. It doesn't have good sides and bad sides or huge battles, but it still reaches in and touches your heart with all the emotions you feel.

Wren fell in love with Danny and Danny fell in love with her. He was taken too soon, and Wren wasn't able to handle losing another person in her life. She had lost her father, her grandmother, her aunt, her mother was closed off...she wasn't able to let go of anymore.

Cold Kiss deals with the consequences Wren faces after bringing Danny back from the dead. He's not a whole person; he's not what Wren remembers. Even in bringing his body back to life, she still wasn't able to bring back what she had lost. It's heartbreaking to see her deal with losing him, even though he's still right in front of her.

Gabriel is a little too perfectly placed for me to completely love this book, but I still enjoyed his character. His abilities seem just a little too convenient, and his arrival too perfect, but he's still a good guy. He just wants to help Wren with Danny, but realizes there are some things he just can't do. I liked how he gave her just enough space, but was always there when she needed him.

Cold Kiss is a touching book about love and letting go. It's about finding the power to continue even when you feel like you can't. It's a wonderful book and I'll definitely be reading Glass Heart.

Mirror Empire Kameron Hurley 9780857665553 Books

So I finally got to Kameron Hurley’s The Mirror Empire, which has been hanging out on my Kindle for some time now. But with the sequel, Emperor Ascendant, due out in a few weeks, I figured it was time to pull it up. And I’m glad I did, since even if I had some issues, The Mirror Empire turned out to be a (mostly) engaging story set in a fascinating world filled with an intriguing crew of characters and cultures, most of which play with “traditional” gender roles.

The setting premise is a universe of parallel (or “mirror”) worlds that over time move closer and farther to one another, that distance affecting the ease of travel between worlds. The astronomical geography (akin to astrology, really) is also the basis of the novel’s magic system, as certain people known as “jistas” can use the satellites that orbit their planet to perform magic, their power waxing and waning with the satellites’ appearance in the sky. Now in ascendance is Oma, the dark star not seen for several millennia. Its prior arrival brought chaos and violence and this time appears to be no different, as one race invades their counterparts in another world in an attempt to flee their own dying one.

The Mirror Empire is set in that invaded world, home to three (that we see) lands. Siduan, ruled by the Patron, is facing the brunt of the invasion and losing pretty badly, while it is unclear at the start just what, if anything, the other two lands even know about the otherworldly attack. Those two lands are Dhai, a small country settled by former slaves (also called Dhai) and ruled by the Kai; and Dorinah, the brutal empire that still runs on Dhai slaves, ruled by an Empress.

The world as presented is richly complex. People ride large bears and dogs, herds of dangerous walking trees roam the countryside while other plants are just as mobile and deadly, blades sprout from forearms, fortresses/holds are living organisms. Meanwhile, gender is fluid in some cultures, with one culture having three and another five (female passive, female assertive, male passive, male assertive, ungendered). And Taigan is someone even a bit more different, in that he/she changes gender in cycles. Adding to the complexity are the family/kin relationships. For example, in Dhai one can have multiple spouses, each of whom brings his/her own kin connection.

In terms of characters, the main POVs include:
• Lilia: a young girl who is an omajista (unknown to her early on) who seeks to come into her own power and avoid becoming a pawn in larger events

• Ahkio: the new Kai of the Dhai people, who must also find his way into power, though in his case political not magical, as he tries to deal with threats both internal and external

• Rohinmey (Rho) a young Dhai novice who dreams of a life of glory and adventure

• Taigan: a Saiduan assassin/magic-user

• Zezili: a Dorninthian general (though of mixed-race) tasked by her Empress to exterminate all the Dhai in the slave camps

This is not an exclusive list, and Hurley does a nice job offering a wide spectrum of views in terms of sides, personalities, genders, and ages. Each has a singular voice, Rho’s youthfulness for instance distinguishable from Lillia’s, even if both fall into the somewhat familiar coming-of-age character type. My two favorites are Taigan and Zezili. The former for the sense of “apartness” the character feels and the latter because she I’d say grows the most, or at least must rethink her place and prior beliefs the most. I also like that Hurley doesn’t feel the need to make her characters “likable.” When ordered to basically exterminate the Dhai, for example, Zezili has no real moral qualms; her concern is about the impact the genocide will have on her people’s economy and lifestyle. The cultures are just as rich as the individual characters, with a sense of both breadth and depth in their traditions, their mores, their familial, racial and political structures.

Interestingly, the strengths of The Mirror Empire are sometimes also its weaknesses. The world is richly complex, but at times that enjoyably challenging complexity edges over into a lack of clarity. This is less of an issue with the just-as-complicated plotting, as the characters themselves are often at sea in terms of what is happening and why, so in this case any confusion felt by the reader simply, um, “mirrors” the same feelings by the characters. That said, readers can expect to be challenged by the shifting settings, the number of characters, the similarity of names, the intricacy of the whose on whose side questions and the like. I don’t mind a challenge, but I do think the novel bogs down thanks to the intricate plotting and the number of POVs. Though the characters feel individual, we shift amongst them so much that I can’t say I truly felt much for any of them. Their plots might have engaged me, but the characters themselves less so. Some streamlining would have gone a long way toward a clearer, tighter, sharper, and more consistently compelling story. And, as has been my usual complaint lately, I’m pretty sure the book didn’t fully deserve its length.

The gender fluidity is a welcome bit of originality and outside-the-box thinking (something one expects to see more of in a genre such as fantasy/sci-fi), but sometimes seems a little too easily glossed over. The gender inversion is equally welcome, with gender roles often flipped, women being more powerful than the men. But I felt Hurley was hitting this point too hard in spots, waving the flag of “See?! See?!” rather than letting the inversion play through naturally. Zezili’s husband, for instance, is a painted doll left to molder at home (where he cutes himself) while his wife goes out a-soldiering. But he really pushes the edge of absurd caricature, and a near-rape scene feels wholly gratuitous. Now, I’m the first to agree that female characters are also presented as caricatures, and there’ s no need to convince me that rape is far too often gratuitous, but I like those characters/scenes about as much as I liked these — that’s to say not at all — and if this was merely to make the point more clear, I’d say Hurley should have trusted her audience more. We didn’t need the hammer.

The Mirror Empire has more than its share of flaws, and I do wish it had pulled me in more than it did, and sooner (the last quarter really had me pretty fully). But I’ll take a flawed work of intelligent ambition, one with layers of complexity and depth, filled with images and concepts, over a too-safe, easy-to-swallow, same-old same-old fantasy. I look forward to the sequel and just hope the execution matches the ambition a bit more closely.

(originally appeared at fantasyliterature.com)

Mirror Empire Kameron Hurley 9780857665553 Books Reviews

SOME authors save the impossible slog toward a slightly-slower death for the middle of the series. Everyone understands the point of the Order of the Phoenix and The Empire Strikes Back. It has to get dark to make the triumph more delicious. Bold move, making the dark the first book. At 560 pages of unsympathetic leads, murderous plants, dynastic scheming, and child murder, Hurley gets tough with the reader right away.

I think this book has a lot of merit. The magic system is relatively fresh. The world has varied geography and languages and history and culture. There are some interesting commentaries on tribalism, mixed children, dehumanization, gender, and what makes effective leadership. There are some interesting omissions -- no horses! Almost no rape! (those are not equivalent in weight, but about equally common in genre) I really enjoyed the worldbuilding on a lot of levels, although I am not living anywhere with that many murderous trees. The arctic wastes for me!

All of that said, this book is unremittingly, unflinchingly bloody. Of our four main viewpoint characters, the body counts are
* Hundreds, plus at least one little kid
* Thousands of refugees, hundreds of soldiers
* Around ten, but he wishes it were so much more, bloody mayhem is way more fun than anything else in life.
* Maybe only a couple, and this lack is what makes him a weak leader

So, last week I went on a twitter rant about how if your book has more than 500 pages, you really need to be justifying this with half-a-dozen viewpoints or a sweeping generational story?

Be careful what you wish for. By my rough count, this book had 8-10 viewpoint characters. Some of them die relatively quickly, but it's a LOT to keep track of. I thought maybe some of them could have been cut without affecting the entirety of the story.

One thing that is really going to help you if you read this book is understanding right up front it's about parallel worlds. I think Hurley wants you to pick that up as you go, but it makes the first quarter of the book massively confusing because sometimes you switch worlds and think you are just switching viewpoint characters, and BONUS POINTS for the characters in all the worlds all have the same name, but different circumstances. So, um, sorry if that's a spoiler, but I don't think it's a super major one.

Read if You like books that acknowledge and depict the hell of war. You also liked the God's War books by Hurley. You are interested in how patterns of oppression mark patterns of dehumanization.

Skip if You do not want to read a book with a cast of thousands of dead people. You like your palace politics small-scale. You are annoyed by stupidly stubborn characters driving the plot.

Read also Glen Cook's Black Company books.
My mother has this set of Dickens as a complete set but someone borrowed this volume and never returned it so I was happy I could replace it. My mother actually re-reads Dickens from time to time and loves owning the set. This is unabridged which is nice because many versions of A Christmas Carol are abridges. Comes with other Christmas books, apparently Dickens would write Christmas books that were printed up nicely to give as Christmas gifts, ahead of his time on Christmas marketing I guess...
The best way currently to get the fine works of Charles Dickens.
I have long read and reread the stories and reflections of the master author. The insights of the damage done to any society by the conservative to any society in any age!
lovely copy,
Perfect copy.
A classic so you've got to love this. The only complaint I have and it's not reflected in the review is that the seller placed a sticker on the cover of the book and as carefully as I peeled it off it pulled off a bit of the book cover. I would suggest in the future to put the sticker inside the book if you have to use one
Thackeray is definitely a case unto himself, and a writer I enjoy tremendously. His wit and humor are nicely portrayed in four of the five stories comprising the book as he takes on the foibles of the social sets.

For those four, a higher rating would be fine. The fifth one, however, was a bit too long for the tale it told, and frankly the story was not all that interesting.
Good stories by Dickens. The first 3 or 4 are certainly 'Christmas-oriented'. Many of the others (while originally having been published during the Christmas season) only lightly reference the holiday or are not really 'Christmas stories'. Still, Dickens' stories are very enjoyable and of course well-written.
